View Full Version : The Interisland Krispy Kreme Trade

A fun story came down the Reuters news wire this morning:

Flights Jammed with Flying Doughnuts (http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=4825032&section=news)

Why the dateline is Seattle, I'm not sure, but I can attest to the accuracy of the report! I imagine any mid- to large-sized company has a designated Krispy Kreme supplier by now. Where I work, having offices on the neighbor islands and regular meetings here in Honolulu means I see those Krispy Kreme boxes quite often.

If only I could get to them before everyone else did.

Who's tried 'em? Are they really that good? And if you don't live near one, how do you get your Krispy Kreme fix?

I've had Krispy Kremes on the mainland, and I have to say that they really are very good... if they're fresh from the machine. (See this Quicktime movie (http://www.krispykreme.com/dmaking.html) for the mouth-watering details.) But once they cool down, they're not much better than any other doughnut. So bringing Krispy Kremes interisland as omiyage never made sense to me...

I have to agree with Glen about eating them when it's old. The two times I got to taste them was from someone who brought over from the mainland or from Maui. It's not bad but I don't taste anything special with them.

I guess when the Oahu location is open and I have a chance to try it fresh then maybe I will get to change my stance on it.

Where's that Honolulu location going to be? I secretly hoped it would've been one of the little stores that was going to cling like a barnacle to the retail whale that is WalMart on Keeaumoku. Sadly, it was not to be.

I just spotted this great image (http://www.hawaiipublicradio.org/chal04pics.htm) on the HPR website. The caption explains:

Believe it or not, Maui News reporter Liz Janes-Brown handcarried a dozen fresh Krispy Kreme donuts from Maui to Honolulu and offered them for a True Believer pledge which was promptly grabbed by John Morgan, who was actually in his car and near the station at the time he heard the unusual offer. John made good on his pledge, and went off with his prize to wife Staci. For mainland web visits bewildered by this phenomenon, we should mention that Hawaii has only one Krispie Kreme donut shop, and it's in Kahului on Maui.Hmm. Fundraising opportunity?

Speaking of fund raising, someone brought in a couple of boxes of Krispy Kreme to work today. I asked the person who brought in "so how come you went to Maui?". The answer was she didn't, they had setup at CompUSA on Wednesday morning to sell for Special Olympics.

Yes, I'm not sure who the contact is, but I've heard that Krispy Kreme does fundraisers on Oahu.

By the way, there was a bakery in the Aiea Shopping Center called Krispy Kreme, but it wasn't affiliated with the national chain. It was still good, though, and it offered one of the coolest things I've seen in a local bakery: hot dogs served in long-john buns. Yummy.

I, too, have heard that they're really nothing to write home about unless you get them fresh and warm, right out of the fryer.

I know the address was given, but that's not much help in finding it...

It's located right by Kahului airport, next to the Lexus dealership.
Coming out of the airport road you'll drive right by it. Look for the flashing red sign which signifies them taking fresh doughnuts out of the cooker. :)

Is there really going to be a Krispy Kreme on Oahu? When?I haven't heard anything new for a while, and it's not like their Maui store is hurting for business. This old Advertiser article (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/2000/Aug/10/business1.html) mentions a seven-year plan... meaning we could wait (or weight?) another three years at least.

Oddly enough, Krispy Kreme knows the demand, and ships big crates over to Honolulu now and then, usually to sell as part of a charity auction. Also, although I don't know if it's charity-related or not, there was a woman standing along Nimitz Highway fronting the Nimitz Center (home of AAA Hawaii, Eagle Cafe and Sensually Yours) just a couple of hours ago, waving down drivers with a sign promising $10 boxes of Krispy Kreme goodness.

Of course this begs the question since I don't know too much about Maui but by any chance is this Krispy Kreme location in walking distance from the airport?

GOSH! Standing by the roadside just to sell the Krispy Kreme...I'd be very suspect and wonder how old they were! And what if you'd never had one...you wouldn't know if it was the real item!

Nuh, uh. It would be a little over a mile. But, then again, why would you be at the airport on Maui without any ground trans?

Just call it a whacky idea. I think I have enough points to make a round trip to Maui, eat some Krispy Kreame Donuts, take some photos along the way.

I had my first Krispy Kreme doughnut yesterday. OMG! I wasn't even hot and I loved it. I put in an order for two dozen with a school fundraiser to be picked up (in the Office Max lot) on June 8th. It's too bad that no one in my office eats doughnuts. ;)

I go back home to Maui a few times a month and am always mystified by the vast quantities of donuts that people are carting back to Honolulu. Why anyone would pay large sums of money to buy crates of these things is beyond me. And yes, I find them quite good (send them through the glaze curtain for a second pass), but never eat them. I've never even been to the Maui store yet. Anyway, I prefer Komoda's.

Anything "new" is a novelty in the islands. KK donuts are a treat! But omg! They are so so so sweet! I still prefer coco puffs from Liliha Bakery! Too bad 9th Ave Bakery in Kaimuki closed - they had the BEST long johns and cream puffs! Miss the "old time bakery" products - where they used REAL butter and eggs - and not the pre mix stuff!

:p aaahh krispy cremes...there are kk factories all over the south.all grocery stores &most convenience stores carry them...every wed.the kk truck delivers them accross the street from my job...we 3 mgrs. have noticed that truck is parked closer &closer every time, motor running, back gate down..you can smell em they're so close!! we haven't eaten one in over 3 months cause we eat way too much...but,we've agreed that when it's finally parked close enough,we may have to close shop & steal the damn thing....we're thinking the high speed chase, grand theft auto charge & eating all we can eat just might kinda sorta be worth the jail sentence!!sad huh??

Maybe no need bribe da ohana who holoholo to Maui to bring back Krispy Kreme donuts pretty soon..according to da story below, McDonald's or Arby's might end up buying KK. KK has seen sales plummet since the low carb craze started...

Eh, according to dis newstory, KK wen go introduce some frozen drinks that taste like da original glazed, plus get raspberry and chocolate kine foa summer. I haven't been insai da local KK in about 6 months, so I dunno if dese tings eva made it to market.

Anyway, good ting you guys oni get one KK in da 'aina right now. Da carbs for 1 of dese frozen drinks equal da carb count of about 4 original KK donuts, so you going get heart attack 4x faster drinking one of dese buggahs! :(

KK admits their sales have slumped because of da carb counting craze, but dey wen also go say dey get no plans to make low carb versions of da frozen drink (SBUX wen go cave in, and their Frap Lite ain't bad).
