  • Roti Shops?

I neeeeed to find roti! Good ol' Trinidad roti, like my auntie used to make!

Not Indian roti, not Jamaican roti. Dahl pouri (sp?) roti from the West Indies. Are there any roti shops on Oahu?? Or any West Indian stores??

    Re: Roti Shops?

Wow, roti! What a surprise on this forum. I tasted my first roti years ago when I was visiting the public market in Suva, Fiji. Some Indian guys were sitting in their stall eating lunch and curious (which I am by nature) inquired about what they were eating. They said "roti" and offered to share their lunch with me. So I squatted down in the stall with them and we had talk story with lots of laughing. It was one of those unforgetable cross cultural experiences! I thought the food was fabulous. They directed me to a local restaurant where I went the next day and purchased my own roti and took some back to my Indian pals. I always order it today when eating at an Indian rest.

I didn't know there was West Indian roti. Heck I'll give it a try. Let me know what you find in the islands, T-girl.

Yummy chicken curry made by our neighbor who grew up in Trinidad & Tobago.

We're still begging her to share the recipe...

Roti bread is what you use to wrap up the yummy curry chicken!

Kinda like a tortilla or naan, but better. Inside the bread is a moist delicious layer of ground spiced and fried split peas. Jamaican roti doesn't have the split pea layer. Naan is all wrong - the spice layer is different and dry. Tortillas? Not even!

West Indian Roti is my favorite, I totally grew up on it! Must have Roti!! I guess if I can't find it here, I'll have to beg my mommy to overnight me some from Florida. (big Trini population there)

Reminds me of injira (sp?), a spongy flat bread used in Ethiopian cuisine. It's very good! If you find one on Oahu, PM me!!!

I've looked high and low for an Ethiopian restaurant here. Many in San Francisco where I lived for several years. An incredible cuisine. MISS IT!

Interesting and yummy sounding. If you can't find them, make your own. Just scoll down for the "dhalpouri bread".

wow. DREye, you are sooo sweet! Thanks for the recipe website!!

I may indeed have to make my own. But it takes ALL day!! Trust me, Ive done it! And it takes up all of the counter space I've got, and then some!

I don't own a rolling pin yet! And I only own 3 pots!

And I don't have a tawa to cook them on! Argh! I really need to call my auntie and have her send me a tawa!! Does anybody know where I can get a good ol' fashioned cast iron tawa around here? A tawa is like a giant round griddle, or tortilla cooker.

Or a West Indian store. I think that some bwi clerk out there is just waiting to answer my goofy questions, and lead me to roti. If only I could find a Trini store...

                    Re: Roti Shops?

I'd think a large cast iron frying pan or griddle would work fairly well. If you need a heat source to match the size, you could fire up some briquets and sit the pan/griddle on them. Kinda like Dutch oven cooking, or use a smaller, round BBQ grill. Just fire up the briquets and place the cast iron pan/griddle upside down over the heat. Of course, don't forget to season the cast iron pan first. Just some thoughts.

Sorry, I don't know where you can get it here! I also am only familiar with Fijian roti. Menehune Man tells me his wife (a Fijian) makes roti! I'm hoping to be invited over the next time she does!

I'm not familiar at all with Fiji roti. Is it similar to Trinidad roti?
