  • Taliban split with al Qaeda, seek peace

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapc...lks/index.html

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Taliban leaders are holding Saudi-brokered talks with the Afghan government to end the country's bloody conflict -- and are severing their ties with al Qaeda, sources close to the historic discussions have told CNN.
King Abdullah of Saudia Arabia hosted meetings between the Afghan government and the Taliban, a source says.

The militia, which has been intensifying its attacks on the U.S.-led coalition that toppled it from power in 2001 for harboring Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, has been involved in four days of talks hosted by Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, says the source.

The talks -- the first of their kind aimed at resolving the lengthy conflict in Afghanistan -- mark a significant move by the Saudi leadership to take a direct role in Afghanistan, hosting delegates who have until recently been their enemies.

We'll see. Maybe we should send Obama.

It's too early to discern anything from this.

It's possible that they, like Fatah, want to step away from extremism (in the relative sense) whether they are sincere in ideology or if they just realize it's the only way to salvage what little political power they can.

Whether they changed or not, I'd rather see them go the way of the Dodo birds and Nazis.

Same here. They were disastrous for Afghanistan and a danger to the world. Even the late Zahir Shah would have been a vast improvement.

I think it could be REALLY big news....

the fact it is all timed in with the US elections makes it a bit fishy, and if they REALLY want/ed peace...turn over bin laden.

They wouldn't dare! That would ruin Sen. McCain's big plans. He said during the recent debate that he knows how to catch Bin Laden, and will do so as President! So if he loses, I guess he'll keep that big ol' plan all to himself, and let more die in the process, huh?

If he doesn't want to tell his fellow prisoners, frankly, I don't blame him.

Can the Taliban understand that women need not cover their face and body, unless it is a choice (a woman's)?

Actually, the real story is probably that they disagreed whether to attack the White House or the Capitol building first. And the third party extremist said "both". Then they started insulting each other's mothers.
