While Hefti will best be remembered for composing the Batman theme, it would be a terrible insult to his great talent to simply leave it at that.

Hefti was one of the great orchestral arrangers and conductors in the pop/jazz genre. (Ranked right up there with Nelson Riddle and Billy May.) He was involved with many of the great recordings put out by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, and countless others. He will be missed.

Was he able to live comfortably with that one theme song like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?

A jazz singer whose album I produced had his "Li'l Darlin'" as her theme song for several years; a lot of folks did his "Girl Talk," and he also did the theme to "The Odd Couple." Hefti was very successful as a composer and arranger.
