  • Brown Sugar

I have some brown sugar that has gone hard as a rock. If I recall, there is someway to make it soft again. I think maybe heating it in the oven. Any ideas?

Drop a piece of bread in the bag; in fact, storing it with a slice of bread will keep it from happening. Don't know how long it will take, though. I usually just carve out what I need and toss it back into the freezer.

Need the sugar soft now? Put the brown sugar in a container and place in the microwave with a small bowl full of water beside it. Microwave for about 1 minute–check. If it’s still hard, try for another 30 seconds. You can keep doing this until the sugar is soft, but watch that you don’t melt the sugar
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

When I want to be back in Waialua, that's just what I do.

I use the brown sugar over here, which is more like raw sugar...Pop into the mouth, and I am back walking down past St. Michael's Church with the canefield on the other side of the road. In my minds' eye, the sugarmill is belching the black smoke that leaves a taste in my mouth that's exactly the same as the sugar tastes. The sun shines, the canehaul trucks pass, clanking their chains..I pick up a stalk of cane that fell onto the road, peel, bite, chew.....

Interesting, I've never known anyone (not that it's a bad thing) to refrigerate brown sugar.

.......much less freeze it like Lavagirl. I've always stored brown sugar in an airtight container in the cupboard. Never, ever had a problem with brown sugar solidifying into a hard lump. Anyone care to enlighten us on why they keep their's refrigerated or frozen? Just curious.

At my old apartment, I didn't have much available cabinet space, so I used to store things in the fridge that didn't exactly need refrigerated. I didn't buy a lot of perishabled anyway because, well, they're perishable, and I only went grocery shopping once a month.

not quite sure the reasons why people freeze/refrigerate brown sugar? maybe like sophielynette, no cabinet space?

Although, yes, a glass or plastic container works too.
