I went to the Hawaii Maritime Center a couple of days ago; a last visit before they close their doors on May 1.
For those who've never been there, here's a few photos:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_1997.jpg

In the photo above you see that tall observation tower over the Center. Here's the view from up there, looking down at Gordon Biersch at Aloha Tower Marketplace and part of Honolulu Harbor beyond; in the foreground are the remains of two of the Falls Of Clyde's masts:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2009.jpg

A slightly different view, showing more of Falls Of Clyde. (I've got more photos of FOC but will post those in the Boating Photos thread in a little while). Right behind FOC in this photo is where Hokulea used to be tied up. I wonder where they'll keep her now?:

One more view from the tower, looking out the entrance into Honolulu Harbor:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2011.jpg

Moving inside. This is just one of many many carvings:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2022.jpg

And this is just one of many many paintings. (That water damage on the wall behind it worries me.):

I was going to post this one in the Where Is This? thread, but figured it would be too easy. It shows how cattle used to be loaded on and off ships:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2025.jpg

I wanted to go to the Maritime Center before it closes partly because of the exhibits about the TranasPac yacht race and because I'm in the two photos on the wall (below). This photo is of the stern of a Santa Cruz 70, built by Bill Lee specifically for the Maritime Center:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2026.jpg

And here's a look in the cockpit. It gives you an idea, though a real raceboat has much much more equipment and electronics. The hatch opens to the navigation station below, situated there so the navigator can communicate easily with the helmsman. The steering wheel is halfway recessed into the cockpit sole because the wheel is huuuge (90" diameter, as I recall). And that triangular thing on the sole behind the wheel is so the helmsman can brace his feet when the boat is heeled way over to one side or the other :

Here's one of those photos, showing a 70-footer crossing the TransPac finish line, an imaginary line between the red buoy and the Diamond Head lighthouse (right in front of the blue stripe on the spinnaker). Can you see me?

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2028.jpg

Here's the other photo of us racing down the Molokai Channel before the finish. Can you see me now?

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2031.jpg

Here's a close-up. There are six people in this shot, five of whom are not me:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2035.jpg

Enough of that. Back to the Maritime Center itself. A few more to follow...

Oops. Two more TransPac shots. This is the cutout under the cockpit, showing the navigator's station that's under that hatch:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2036.jpg

Last photo, taken outside next to the Falls Of Clyde, just because I like this one :

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/LikaNui/Maritime%20Center%204-16-09/100_2020.jpg

And then the camera batteries died. Hopefully this little taste of the Maritime Center encourages you to go before it closes, and take your keiki too.
I hope some good photographers shoot everything in there before it's gone forever. :(

MJ, all awesome shots! The little girl with the bubbles is my favorite.

Brian, rockin' shots of Sedona also! The last one is my pick of those three.

Alas, I was on the Big Island again last weekend. You may be thinking 'Hmmm, he sure goes to the Big Island a lot'. No secret. I work there on Fridays and this Friday after work was kind of transcendant. I drove down to Honaunau and walked out on the lava at Two Step. There were a couple of local girls with their little dogs and we had a nice exchange. A couple of guys were hanging out by the parking area drinking and a woman walked by. One of them said 'Have one bee-uh (beer)', but she appeared a little hesitant and passed on by. The sunset was very mellow. It was fairly still and the temperature was perfect. I shot the first pic handheld. After I'd taken the shots and the sun had set, I realized the camera was on iso 400. D'oh! After that I drove up the hill and back toward the Manago Hotel. As I was driving along, it felt so right. It triggered something inside me that recalled, in a crystal clear way, exactly how I became connected to this place. I took a bunch of shots of the Manago off the tripod.

I didn't stay at the Manago. I stayed in a nice Ohana above a garage overlooking South Kona. You know how it is when you take a photo and there's no way to capture just how incredible the scene is? This first photo is one of those. The view from the lanai sweeps from the upper slopes of the volcano across Honaunau (the third little bay below the horizon. you almost can't see it.) to Kealakekua on the far right. The second pic is Two Step. You can see the steps just below the dive tank. They make for the easiest possible entry. I took some underwater shots, but I haven't gotten them out of the camera yet. The last pic is at Kealakekua Bay. These guys had this cool little outrigger. I'd like to have seen it sail. There was also a woman with a kid goat that I should've taken a picture of.

good to experiment, I have tons of sunset shots shot handheld, and are some of my favorites. the only time I want the tripod out of sunset shots is when i want the water to look a little swirly, or i'm really playing with the light by using a high f-stop like f11, etc

Some people in this liberal oasis on the internet cannot even tolerate one single photo from a conservative perspective. :confused:Your photo is great, as are all of the ones I've seen of yours, here and elsewhere - hell, why wouldn't they be? You are a pro, after all. But there is a bit of cloudiness to your eye, it seems.

It wasn't the photo to which my comment was aimed, it was your baited comment with the photo. There is a thread here (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=16682) on the topic. If you are afraid to defend your viewpoint there, fine, but don't despoil something else that was free of such heat, previously an oasis for people who might want to avoid politics/religion/social issues, and just enjoy the art of fine photography.

Feel free to climb off your high horse now, sir - it appears to be missing its front end anyway.

More Big Island Adventure:

On Friday night afer work I went, at the suggestion of one of my colleagues, to a restaurant called Rapanui, featuring New Zealand and Pacific Island cuisine. I had the catch of the day, Ono. Ono is the Hawaiian equivalent of Halibut. Very different types of fish, but the meat is very similar. My favorite. It was seasoned with cracked pepper and curry powder. The presentation was great and the flavors were mind bogglingly delicious. The waitress was very friendly and mellow. I sat outside in a little corridor facing the sea. I highly recommend it.

More Kahalu'u.

I keep trying to get a definitive shot of a humuhumunukunukuapua'a, but it's not that easy. They move almost continuously and have an uncanny ability to keep their bodies at angles other than perpendicular to the camera.

First I ended up driving toward the plume of smoke I thought was the outgassing from the vent. More on that later. It took me to a place where there were signs that said "Danger. No Trespassing. Enter at Your Own Risk." I have to admit I was compelled to get just a little closer to get a good shot. So I drove up to where there were some other cars and got out. Right away a woman pulled up and said we weren't supposed to be there and to come back at 5pm and we could go down to a place to view the plume of what must apparently be largely water vapor from where the lava is entering the sea. That's what I'd been seeing and had photographed last time. Not the outgassing. So I headed back toward the end of the road and walked out over the lava to the black sand beach.

In these pics of the waves, you can see how the water churns up and carries the black sand as it breaks on the shore, causing the wave to be black in color.

http://diamondwillow.smugmug.com/photos/547408231_G9Ka3-XL.jpg

I've posted a pic like this before, but it's really an extremely beautiful and pleasant place to spend some time. Outside of this photo to the right, directly into the ocean, there is a small field of rounded black pebbles and stones at the surf's edge. When the surf retreats, the water rocks the stones together and they make a chorus of clicking sounds that is audible even with the sound of the waves crashing.

Well, it's almost 5pm, so I head back over to enter at my own risk. As you can see, there's not just one plume, but two. You can see a helicopter above the big plume. I'll post the rest tomorrow night. The best is yet to come.:p

Cool photo! I wonder what something like that weighs? And where they'll be cleaning it. Hmmm.

Each medallion weighs about 7,500 pounds. Read about them here (http://www.starbulletin.com/news/20090524_heavy_duty_sealing.html?mobile=true).

And here is where they are being stored and will be cleaned.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3196/3547711325_9d19206d6c_o.jpg

This was shot about a week and a half ago. Today both seals are standing upright in this scaffolding.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3596/3551247738_d1cb57fe39_o.jpg

This is when they were taking down the one in front of Beretania St.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2436/3554537488_87f224d1ac_o.jpg

And here is the same seal laying flat next to the scaffolding before they brought in a crane and hoisted it into the slot next to the one pictured on the top. This photo and the one on the very top were shot with my tiny fixed focus Sony Cybershot U30 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/macprohawaii/2108204046/in/set-72157605995298701/) pocket camera. From the parking area, it's about 3/4 of a mile to the viewing area over the lava. On this day, all of the fumes were being blown toward Mauna Loa. Had the wind been otherwise it could have been dangerous to persons with heart or breathing problems. It's something to consider should you decide to go have a look. You'll also need a flashlight for the walk back and enough water to get you from 5pm to maybe 8pm or so. There were people set up selling water, flashlights, glowsticks, photos, jewelry, t-shirts, etc. near the parking area. I would add that it was a very long drive back to Kona after a long day of running around. I'd recommend staying overnight on that side of the island.

This first photo is an extreme wide-angle, so it makes it look like we were further away than we were. I think they said we were about 1/2 mile away. The lava was pooring into the sea on the other side of the lava bench, so we never got to actually see molten rock on this night. I heard one guy say he was so disappointed. I suppose if people come with that expectation they could be let down, but I hadn't even planned on seeing what I did so I was completely jazzed. I got the impression the majority of others were satisfied customers. After all, it was free, courtesy of Madame Pele.

The pictures don't really do it justice. The rolling and billowing of the steam is a thing of absolute beauty and fascination. In the third pic of these three, you can see a small boat in the lower left. I felt they were dangerously close to the lava. As it got darker, every now and then some of the lava would explode and send "sparks" or streamers out as far as the boat was from the bench.

cyleet99, I really enjoyed those May Day program pics. Mahalo!
It looked a lot like the May Day programs I remember from my own "hanabata days", way back when.
Those days now qualify as "ancient history"...

With all the work it entails, I don't know how many schools today still do the whole May Day program thing.
But it's good to see that some schools are still keeping the tradition alive!

Excellent shots of the May Day program, Cyleet! Definitely fun to see. And thanks for checking out the names of those fish. The rockmover is very appropriately named because that is exactly what it was doing. It'd get a big mouthful of little rocks and then spit them out a little ways away.

Mel, that shot at the Governor's is top notch. Everyone's smiling and they've all got their eyes open. It's tack sharp and the exposure is perfect. No small feat. More like a small miracle!

A few from the weekend....

Being in Northern VA, never REALLY realized how much (mainland)History is seriously within walking distance of my house. Here are a few form a place I motor by every morning, but have never stopped at...Blenhiem House

The beautifully restored Blenheim estate opens just once a year, during the Blenheim Civil War Encampment, one of the most popular local events in Fairfax.
During the remainder of the year, the home is not open to the public but is a popular photo opportunity on historic walking tours.
The attic of the home is notable for the notes, drawings, and signatures carved into the walls by Union soldiers during the Civil War

though the attic was not open for viewing, there was a replica, and some very cool drawings(or old school graffiti). though I couldn't get any shots of that, this text describes on of the depictions carved into the walls, and I wonder how it would still translate into todays soldiers feelings

Way back when the South road was first cut off and Pahoa town disappeared, I drove to the West end of the road and walked in to see the flow entering the ocean.

I got pretty close, like 75 yards or so, when a 'ranger' came running up and advised me that the flows weren't mapped yet, and another step could break through the crust and burn my feet off to my hips....

He was likely being over cautious, but I thanked him, took a few pictures (nothing spectacular) and he 'escorted' me back to my car.

Tini is a great little boat. I have lots of work to do, making it truly seaworthy though.
Went out this morning to the last Keehi channel marker to complete my State Harbor Inspection. I had a wonderful, peaceful time alone.

But I did have time to take this shot with my iPhone and messed around with this app called Piratize!

Great shots Menehune Man, Mel, Tat, and Asuhoru. Your baby pirate is superbad.

I went up to Alaska for the 4th to visit family. I'll post some of the pics over the next few days.

This first one is the Chugach Mountain Range just east of Anchorage. Rugged stuff that goes on forever. Props to the Alaska Airlines Jet. That window was primo for photos. There were some big forest fires up there, so there's some significant haze in the pic.

http://diamondwillow.smugmug.com/photos/592587078_N9JtY-XL.jpg

Right away we went down to Seward, on Resurrection Bay, for the 4th of July celebration and the Mount Marathon Race. We stayed in a little cabin so it was pretty easy going, but I slept on a hide-a-bed with one of my nephews and sleeping on that damn thing was truly "roughing it". We built a campfire which was great fun. Days were warm, but the evenings were cool. The warmth of the fire on your face felt great in contrast to the cool on your back. I'd forgotten how pleasureable a campfire is. It's very hypnotic. I'm anxious to do it again.

http://diamondwillow.smugmug.com/photos/592586962_tMGb7-XL.jpg

After the fire, the pulsing glow of the coals keeps you up a little longer before calling it a night. If you hold your hands up close to the monitor, you can feel the warmth. Go ahead. You know you want to.

One day we hiked up to the Raven Glacier at Crow Pass. It's about 8 miles roundtrip from the trailhead and you gain about 2800 feet in elevation, not counting rises and falls along the way. Not a killer, but it weeds out the casual strollers. One foot in front of the other. It'll be worth it.

http://diamondwillow.smugmug.com/photos/600244039_eXgni-XL.jpg

It was nice and warm and the hike gets your blood circulating real good. When we got to the little mountain lake/pond near the top, one of my nephews insisted on going for a dip. The water is coming straight from glacier and snowpack, so it's ice cold. He laid down in it for a short while, then popped out with a big grin and said "I'm numb". A true Alaskan.

http://diamondwillow.smugmug.com/photos/600225666_BvDit-XL.jpg

At the top of the pass, we stopped to take it all in for a while. We had a snack, including Kona coffee glazed mac nuts from Tropical Farms Hawaii. Here's one of me and two of my nephews in front of Raven Glacier.

Thanks for the comments on the pics. Alaska is definitely an awe inspiring place. It's also very cold and dark in the winter. You need to enjoy winter sports or being inside a lot, but you can have frequent moose and occassional bears in your yard for your viewing pleasure.

Brian, the BC Mountains, fireweed, and peaks w/smoke were all shot with the 18-200m. The others were shot with the 12-24mm.

I'll throw this out there in case anyone else has this experience with their camera (if it's an SLR). Quite a while back, I started having spots and blips show up in my photos, particularly in skies or any area of the pic that had little detail. I've done a ton of processing to 'photoshop' them out. I cleaned my lenses good to no avail. I wondered if there was dust that had gotten inside the lenses or if the camera sensor had gotten dust on it. I assumed that in either of those instances it would require shipping to the manufacturer for a costly cleaning. Turns out, this is common and can be remedied with an air blower, not areosol though. So I got a Giotta air blower, put the camera on mirror lock-up, and a couple of puffs did the trick.

Maybe more Alaska pics later, but here's three shots from Friday morning on my way to work in Kona. First is Molokai, Lanai, and West Maui. Second is the West Maui mountains. Third is Lanai and Maui. The clouds obscure the land that connects west Maui with Haleakala.

Awesome pic, MM!

Last time I was on Big Island I only took one pic. I was in the Blue Ginger Gallery in Kealakekua looking for a gift. There was this wild Hawaiian mountain cat resting on the glass display case. Nothing but a mass of muscle and bone, tendons and sinew. Spring-steel ready to come unglued at any moment. I had to approach nearly motionless, lest I arouse it's killer instinct and unleash claws of fury.

Beautiful, Lika! I saw the deep red clouds over the mountains as I was leaving home at 0600; stunning view. And when the sun got up a little, the clouds over the mountains glowed pink with bright edges. "No, officer, I haven't been drinking, but I have been watching the sunrise...."

I couldn't help myself..."red in the morning, sailors take warning..." Wonder if that fits here in the Pacific.

Loved the time-lapse photos.

Awesome shots, LikaNui! I don't imagine you ever sit out on your lanai.;)

I haven't taken many pics lately, but here are a few. First one is when you just come around the corner past the turnout to Hanauma Bay.

This last one is a garden variety photo, but I post it to see if anyone knows where this is. If you've been there, you would likely remember these planters. Also, if you've been there, you probably like to see what's off the beaten path. I appreciated the care that had been put into this.

Me too, TATTRAT. Me too.

Those pictures are amazing, all of you. There is nothing here that even compares to it.

I did find a picture that I took here (well, in Oklahoma) of- you know how they say to close your eyes and picture yourself walking down a road? And that's your life as you see it? Well, I actually found my road. Like, made my friend stop the car so I could jump out and take a picture found it.

Enjoyed a wonderful "Mom" day!
Started off with renting a nice nissan and picking her up.
Ate breakfast at Koa House Kaneohe, then driving out to Kualoa area before returning to the boat harbor. Then an extra special thing happened when a funny looking duke walked up to me asking "are there any Menehune in the vicinity". HaHa! It was Likanui! Great to finally meet you my friend. Then mom and I boarded the "Coral Queen" glass bottomed boat for a 2 hour tour around Coconut Island aka.-Gilligan's Island. Totally choice, will flickr thru the lot of the photos soon.

"Funny looking"? "FUNNY LOOKING"?!?!!? Look at my avatar! How can you call that cute little face "funny looking"? And ya gotta admit, that IS me in the avatar.
Anyway, it was great finally meeting you too, after all these years here on HT. Too bad we only had a few minutes before we each had to go our own way. Looking forward to seeing your photos, and please give my aloha to your mom. What a sweetie!
Don't know how a wonderful woman like that raised a rude son who calls people "funny looking," though. Hmmmph.
(And hey, I just noticed you called me "duke" instead of "dude". Maybe you're not so bad after all.)

Wow! Very good pics in this thread!! Here is my first picture that I've ever posted and it's just taken with my iphone held up to the eyepiece of my telescope. The quality is complete garbage and the only reason why I think it's cool at all is that what I'm photographing is 16 miles away and usually at this distance the air turbulence and temperature differences make these images much more blurry. We went to see the Cirque du Soleil performance "O" at the Bellagio one night. It was mind-blowing. If there's on thing you should do in Vegas, this is it. Sorry, no cameras were allowed inside. We also did dinner at the Tao Asian Bistro in the Venetian. The big banner on the strip advertised "Spiritual Dining. Religious Nightlife." Food was great. Atmosphere was better. Early this morning I was tipped off and caught this photo of the Russian built Anotov AN 225, the world's biggest plane, taking off in the Honolulu skies. Nice shot, Mel! I actually got on board that same jet at HNL a little over a decade ago. It had been chartered by the owners of two 80' racing sailboats to bring them over from the east coast for the Kenwood Cup series here. I got to be on the tarmac at the hangars when the plane arrived. (18 wheels to support the size and weight of that jet!) Then I got to go inside the jet. The whole nose raises up, and the interior was just one giant cavern. There's a ladder on the port side of the fuselage to climb up to the cockpit. I've got photos of that whole morning, but they're in a box somewhere. :o
You can read about the Antonov AN 225 at this link (http://www.aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/transport-m/an225/).

Would be great to see those pictures someday LikaNui. I think the biggest jet I been in was probably the C5 or some other military transport plane that was on display at Hickam some years back. I remember walking in from the front and getting out from the rear. That was pretty big.

Went to the Waimanalo Country Fair this afternoon with Turtlegirl and her significant other (whom I would refer to by name but I'm not sure he wants to be famous on HT). It was truly a beautiful thing. Everybody was happy and having a good time. Kids were playing carnie games and going on rides. I thought it was a great little carnival too. It reminded me of the carnivals that came through town every summer when I was a kid.

I snapped a handful of pics as we made our way around. I didn't realize it until just now, but the boy in the last two pics is the same little guy.

Here's a picture I took of Utah's snow-capped, Henry Mountains from Lake Powell. The picture was actually taken in April a couple of years ago. Although things were calm when I snapped this, the wind kicked up later in the week and nearly blew our houseboat off its mooring.
