  • STRANGE plant!

This plant sprouted up in my yard.

The leaves are similar to the eggplant (7-point leaves, fuzzy dark green), the flowers are small, white, five-lobed, fused, with a yellow center. The fruits so far are globular and green, with a tomato smell.

    I thought Tomatillo? No...
    Nightshade? I don't think so.
Poha? I've never seen one, but the description seems different.

Any help or direction is appreciated - I've exhausted my books and the internet.

    Mahalo!

There are tons of tomato plants growing wild up here; the fruit is the size of a large pea, but definitely a tomato plant. But I figure if yours is big enough to have tomatoes, you'd know if it was that. These grow like weeds. How big is the fruit?

No, it's NOT a std. tomato - the leaves are like eggplant leaves, not tomato leaves, and the flowers are white, not yellow, as tomatoes are.
The fruit (so far) is about 1/2 inch in diameter, but green. The insides look kinda tomatoey - seeds in a gel-fiber - but this is a BIG plant family.

Eggplants, tomatoes (various), nightshade, tomatillos, ground cherries, cape gooseberry (maybe..., but no husk), poha?

      I'll work on pictures soon....

I went to the library and found out. It's a tomato relative, called a 'turkeyberry.'

Now I have to find out if it's poisonous!

Ooohh. One of the names listed in the Wikipedia page is Prickly Nightshade, but it doesn't seem to be poisonous, at least to humans.

          Veddy interesting!!

            Tanks, eh?

Well, I found some places what list it as an invasive (spreading and deading) species, and which DO say it is poisonous to mice....

Maybe I'll feed it to my roof rats and see what happens...

In the meantime: "DOWN IT GOES!"

Like Jesus, John and others said 2000 years ago, if it don't have GOOD fruits... 'MAKE' DIE DEAD!

You want poison seeds? better hurry, they gone tomorrow.

Thanks, mahalo all for your directions, suggestions, et al.

            Jeez, I'm smiley crazy tonight.
