    Starting in about the middle ages a global cooling settled in for
    a few centuries.
    The snowline probably lay lower than the current 7000 foot level seen on
    Hawaii at this time.
    If either Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa were a mere thousand feet taller
    they would each carry a year round snowpack.
