  • What Do You Think About Hawaii's "pop" Music?

    Aloha,

I just wanted to get a vibe on how you might feel about the local “Pop” music scene. What I mean by that is the Reggae/Jawaiian music that seems to have a choke hold on the island.

    What do you think?

What kind of local music do you miss hearing on the radio?

    TY

I try not to think about it too much at all...

    too much jawaiian nowdays.

don't like how the calif rap culture (crap, for short) has got is tentacles here; with the resultant grafitti everywhere.
lotta locals doin the rap - tough street ganstah posing. doesn't work atall. With the O.G's, this was a response to their life and setting in general and how they were treated in south central.
here, they are nothing more than Posers.
    nope. dont thinksewww...

aggro alt rock... too much here too.

Miss the palani vaughn Sunday manoa gabby days of the 70's.
    mackey Feary, early C&K. etcetera...

Too much jawaiian, too many poor covers of old motown songs, not enough originality.

I miss the late '70s "Hawaiian Contemporary" era: C&K, Kalapana, Country Comfort, Olomana, etc.

I agree with you 110%. I am not a fan of hip hop or rap and I've never like jawaiian, even a little bit.

So how did the Jawaiian sound get so big? It gives Hawaii Contemporary music a black eye.

Hip Hop and Rap are slowly fading with the listening generation getting older.

I think it started with Butch Helemano and Bruddah Waltah in the late '80s-early '90s (Sweet Lady of Waiahole anyone???), along with Kapena. I think the whole Jawaiian thing has been way overplayed(and this is from someone who was one of the few ppl in my 8th grade class who knew who Bob Marley was when he died), although I do like Kapena very much.

Amen sista! I seems to me hawaiian pop music peaked in the 70's . No more talent nowdays only wannabe singers.... I love bands like Hapa and The Hawaiian Style Band for at least trying to be original.

Woohoo, Peshkwe! Now I know what you've been doing!

What an honor for the guys (and gals) to be nominated for a Hoku. Hope they are pleasantly rewarded come June 3. Now that I've heard snippets of their stuff (and the recommendations from Aunty @mele.com and Wayne Harada, among others) and with Aunty Genoa and her ohana helping out, I'm sure it's going to be a winner!

                    Congrats.

                        Yeah it is!!!

It would be so nice if they could win in one of the catagories they're up for, but there's a boatload of good competition...all I can do is keep my fingers crossed and keep 'em in my prayers.
