  • Move over Yugo, here comes Chery!

    Malcolm Bricklin, the entrepreneur owner of Visionary Vehicles LLC, is now in talks with Chery Automobile Co. (which is owned by the Chinese government) to start importing 250,000 Chinese-made vehicles for US sale. Bricklin says it wouldn't make sense to start another car company if he can't sell cars for 30% less than what is available today, and he expects the quality and styling to be as good as Japanese cars.

    Well, he had a hit when he started importing Subarus into this country (he also manufactured the gull-wing Bricklin), but he had a miss when he brought the Yugo here to our shores. So he's got a 50% chance of making money and breaking into the automotive market with the Chery. Of course, this does create one eency problem for the US car manufacturers: it means another competitor that will take away more manufacturing jobs, and we'd be dealing directly with a foreign nationally owned company. Ain't globalization wonderful? Will you be one of the first to by a 2007 Chery?

    Let the jokes begin...

    after owning them for a while we will hear:

    how fruity is that!
    It ain't a chery, it's a lemon!

    This chery turned into a chery bomb!

    Plus, it may end up being a little problematic:
    this is only one letter away from Chevy.
    automatic spellcheck (or those unfamiliar with the new breed,) will turn this car, wikiwiki, into an amelican car, in writing.

    The chery ad execs could say;
    want a REAL economical car, YOU GO get a Chery!
    It's a sweeeet ride!

      That's probably why the Chinese government named the company that way. Have you ever seen those knock-off replica watches, etc? One time when I was in NYC and in Little Italy, I bought a knock-off Movado. The name on the face was "Morado" and it ran for about a month.

              How'd I get so white and nerdy?

                          My dream is to have my 1997 Saturn SL2 last for ten years. It's in the middle of its 8th year right now, and is still in decent shape. If I can stretch it out to 10 years, then by that time our 2002 Quest will be paid off. Then I can retire the Saturn, buy a replacement, and not have to pay two car loans at once!

                            My 1997 Geo Metro has 42K on it. I bought it at Budget in 1998 with 13K on it. Most frequent problem? Driver-side window regulators want to bend and jam the window glass. I've had that fixed twice in two years.

                            One engine problem, and I don't remember what it was (I wonder if the receipt's in the glove compartment?).

                            At this rate, I may have it till I die.
