  • Rest in Peace Mark Wells! Star Basketball Player

Dead Maui Man identified as ex-basketball star of the 1982 Charminade Basketball Team that defeated top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. It is considered the greatest upset in College Basketball History.(taken from kgmb.com)

I knew Mark Wells! A handsome man who although a druggie, was always clean and knew how to dress well. He was articulate and I would often try to tell him to get help. He refused, said the demons were to strong! I never did ask him why he started, everybody has their own stories to tell. Some prefer to keep it to themselves. Unfortunately, it eats them inside even more.

The Star-Bulletin had a good piece on Wells yesterday.

    Drugs dimmed Chaminade star
    Gary T. Kubota, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, January 5, 2005
Wells, 44, gained national prominence when his Chaminade University team defeated Virginia and its 7-foot-4 center Ralph Sampson in 1982 in one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history. But Wells' life after basketball prominence was a slide into substance abuse and petty crimes. It ended with him as a suspect in an alleged sex assault, and the victim of multiple gunshot wounds on a remote north Maui hiking trail.

Another story about Mark Wells in today's Maui News, this time, it's an email interview with his sister in Delaware, who said she had a feeling something was wrong when he didn't call her during the holidays:
