  • Mongoose sighting

We have acquired a mongoose or two in our yard (not by choice!). This wouldn't bother me except that we've got a 12-year-old dog who's feeling like her property has been invaded. Her age is significant only because, while she's still fast, I'm not sure she's fast enough to get away from one of these critters if she's foolish enough to get in a fight with it.

Has anyone ever heard of dog-mongoose confrontations?

    Re: Mongoose sighting

Update: I've been puzzling about why we suddenly see these critters after 30 years of living in this house and not seeing any. I think I've figured it out.

Yesterday afternoon I was standing at the kitchen counter while dinner was cooking, and I happened to look out the window. There below the neighbor's avocado tree (on our side of the fence) was a mongoose happily munching away on a fallen fruit. He looked exactly like those pictures of otters you see in Nature magazine; he was curled up around it with his head nearly entirely inside the thing, chewing down to the seed and around it.

I was pining for my camera, but any sudden move to go get it would have scared him away. I'm gonna bring it out to the kitchen today to see if I can catch something like this if it happens again.

I don't know about dogs, but mongooses and cats get along quite fine on the UH-Manoa campus. The mongoose is such a timid ... and VERY fast ... animal and if either cat or human gets too close, the mongoose will almost instantly vanish.

Sweet little things. I like them a lot.

Yes, I quite agree, they are sweet & cute, but from a distance.
        Yes, they are quite fast.

I wonder, though. aren't those 2 similar to each other? or somewhat in the same family??

Oh, what memories this post brings for me! When I was little, I used to see them alot. We had two poi dogs that we kept outside. When they weren't looking the mongoose would come and help himself to some dry dog food in their bowls!
