Many Americans don't realize that the Bush Administration very quietly has authorized drilling for oil and natural gas on BLM lands in South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico. The Administration may be using the ruckus over exploratory drilling in the tundra of Alaska as a smokescreen to cover up the drilling in the lower 48 states.
Most of the drilling is moving forward without consideration for the environmental damage that is occurring. In South Dakota, for instance, in the summer, tourists may be unable to see the famed Mt. Rushmore monument because of the haze that is being created by the natural gas drilling. In New Mexico, the exploratory drilling will impact one of the last pure desert habitats in North America. If we truly believe that we are more important and can control Mother Nature, then I think we will be deceiving ourselves. Mother Nature has been around longer than the history of humankind, and when the time is right, she will balance everything out again.
