  • Non IE browsers subject to phishing scams

OK, all you lovers of Firefox, Opera et al. Just when you were feeling smug about severing your reliance on Internet Explorer comes word that all the alternative browers are susceptible to phishers who can hijack you to a lookalike website so they can steal your personal information.

Ah, to go back to the good old days when the Internet was just an academic tool!

There's a big long Slashdot thread about this.

What's fascinating about this is that the reason for these "non-IE browsers" being vulnerable is because the hole is in a newly implemented, and apparently not thoroughly tested, feature. Because Internet Explorer development has stopped, and the product is essentially dead, it was never improved to include the feature, and thus safe.

Of course, anyone who uses Internet Explorer in a multilingual environment has probably used plug-ins or other tweaks to add the feature, in which case, they'll be vulnerable too.

The fix is relatively simple, and at least there are people doing the fixing. I suppose I'll still take that over an abandoned product like IE, but this little snafu is proof that everyone needs to stay on top of patches and fixes for their applications and OSes.
