  • 6.7 magnitude quake registered off Vanuatu

No damage from either the earthquake or a tsunami was reported from yesterday's quake. The last quake off Vanuatu was reported in 2004.

A magnitude 6.4 quake was also reported early Tuesday morning off Papua New Guinea. The story reports that although both Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea share the same tectonic collision zone as Sumatra, scientists say these quakes are unrelated to the disastrous December quakes and tsunamis.

Re: 6.7 magnitude quake registered off Vanuatu

Vanuatu is one of those low atolls whose very existence (or at least status as an island) is threatened by global warming and sea-level change. But, this is probably a good reminder that while we might worry about things a thousand years from now, a pretty good wobble underwater could make the place - and lots of other places - vanish in an instant.
