  • Verizon in bidding war for MCI

This news should sound rather ironic to the citizens of Hawai'i, because as Verizon wants to get out of the Hawai'i residential phone service market, they're bidding for long distance carrier MCI (Qwest is the other purported suitor). Maybe they're counting on the money they will receive from Carlyle to pay for this purchase???

Pending approval by the FCC, Verizon announced this morning that they have been successful in buying long distance carrier MCI, leading to a further consolidation of the telecom market.

And Verizon will probably be using some of the proceeds of its sale of Hawaii land line service to Carlyle to buy a 13.4% stake in MCI. That purchase will cost Verizon a cool $1.1 billion.
