  • Isle youth more prone to suicide?

This story in today's Star Bulletin is truly alarming.

For the year 2001, Hawaii's kids were almost 5% more likely to have tried to commit suicide than those on the Mainland. Why are the local kids more despondent than those on the Mainland?

Is it because of the influx of new immigrants who can't adjust to living in a westernized society? Is it rock fever? Is it drugs? Lack of parental control and guidance? Bad public schools?

The state has to take a good look at the root causes and try to fix the problem, because it will only get worse unless something is done. Your kids are Hawaii's future...it would be a shame to lose so many of them at a young age, before they have had a chance to fulfill their potential.
