Very little press has been given to the 8.7 earthquake that rocked an Indonesian island earlier this week and pretty much wiped out the capital city of Nias Island. So far, more than 300 people have been killed on the island. There were no tsunamis generated by this quake or subsequent smaller ones that have been rocking the area since December.
The good thing (if there can be a good thing in the face of human disaster) is that the international aid associations were already in the area helping victims from the December earthquake and tsunami, so the residents of Nias Island had assistance on site much more quickly.
Most of the concrete buildings in the city were severely damaged, but the ones made of wood were pretty much left intact.
It's too bad that this country, which has already been rocked by a major disaster in December and a civil war that's been going on for years, should have to endure another disaster like this.
