New local bank hopes to open by November
Former Central Pacific Bank executive Austin Imamura said consolidation in the local banking industry during the past several years prompted him to start a new bank in Hawaii. Imamura, who has been contemplating the idea for several years, has formed a group of local investors that is behind startup Pacific Rim Bank... "In 1990, we started off the decade with 26 financial institutions," said Imamura, who retired as executive vice president of Central Pacific three years ago. "When I retired in 2002, we had nine (institutions). So right now we've got a shortage and the economy's better and it's really the right time to start up. I believe there are other banks also entertaining the thought of entering the market, too."
    Also:
Other states have competing financial institutions in the double digits at least, several with over 50 each. We might be a small state, but our economy isn't that tiny, and so it follows that there's more than enough room for another local player.

Yeah, but most of the banks in WA anyway, are NATIONAL banks. Most of the small locally-based ones have been bought up by the big boys. There are some advantages to this (as in, if you travel a lot, you can find more cash machines that don't gouge you with that extra $2.50-3/transaction interbank fee). The bad thing is most of the money you put in doesn't do much good for your community; it's mostly going to go elsewhere to help other people.

If you can join a federal credit union, you're doing your community a whole lot more good than by going to a commercial bank, too. The FCUs and the savings institutions put your money to work in your community, rather than shipping it off somewhere else.

Federal credit unions are not the only way to support the local economy. Pacific Rim Bank is a state chartered bank, locally owned and will not ship the money off somewhere.

I'm guessing you are the F.P. who is a Banking Examiner for the State of Alaska, yes? That does certainly add some credence to your comments.

Wow when I spotted this thread one name popped up in my intuitive mind: Dalton Tanonaka. Is that a good thing?

He was the president of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) before being let go. Prior to that he served as CNN's Asia News anchor.

I wouldn't be surprized if he's involved with this new venture.

              New bank ready for business
Pacific Rim Bank, the state's first new banking institution since 1959, held a soft opening yesterday at Restaurant Row for investors and friends, ahead of its official debut to the public Friday.

The single-branch bank, headed by former City Bank executive Austin Imamura, raised the required $10 million to $12 million in funds needed to open and actually received more investment than expected, Imamura said yesterday.
