  • Our own soldiers are killing each other---on purpose

Back during the Vietnam War, there was a kind of incident that really escalated toward the end of the conflict because everybody was getting tired and demoralized. That incident was called "fragging", where fragmentation grenades were lobbed (or hidden) in the beds or close to the targets. This was Americans premeditatively murdering other Americans.

There was one of these incidents reported yesterday in the press, the first "official" fragging incident in which a Staff Sgt. killed two of his superiors. At first, the DoD classified it as deaths by mortar attack, but after examining the evidence more closely, they determined "...he [the accused murderer] used an explosive device to kill the men as they discussed the following day's mission in a room in one of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's palaces.

The alleged killer, Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez, was called "quiet" and "respectful" and "professional". So what made him snap? There was a report that he had been reprimanded earlier by the 2 men he killed. Sgt. Martinez's past was peppered with tragedy before this incident. Being sent into a war zone probably exacerbated any depression he might already have been suffering before he was deployed.

Now THREE American families have lost loved ones because of the psychiatric collapse of one of them. Sad, sad, sad. How many more fragging incidents have to be reported before the DoD realizes that our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are way overstressed and depressed to be fighting an illegal war ?

The best way to honor our men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan (both the living and the dead) is to bring them home as soon as possible.
