    Re: yer fave comedians

    I'm a huge fan of stand-up comedy.

Rita Rudner -- she doesn't do as much stand-up as she used to, but man, she was funny. And kinda hot.

Paula Poundstone -- I admire comics who aren't afraid to be smarter than their audiences without lording it over them.

Robin Williams -- the king, in this fan's opinion.

Dennis Miller -- too fast and too smart, and perfectly willing to lord it over his audiences.

Brian Regan -- the best clean male comic working today.

Margaret Cho -- I don't find her blue stuff very funny at all, but the stuff she does about her mom and dad is dead-on.

Andy Bumatai -- Rap and Frank are more performance guys than stand-up guys. Andy's hilarious without being obnoxious.

Gilbert Gottfried -- speaking of obnoxious, everything he does is super-irritating except his stand-up, which is great.

Bobcat Goldthwait -- before he figured out that he could do Bono, he was hilarious. He has never been funny since.

Jerry Seinfeld -- it's easy to forget how good he was, since he's had so many imitators and since he sorta turned himself into a joke.

    Rosanne Barr -- pre-television.

Whoopi Goldberg -- she almost never did stand-up, but when she did, it was right up there with the best.

Yakhov Smirnov -- for a brief, shining moment, the most original comic in the world.

Garry Shandling -- also turned himself into a joke, but before Larry Sanders (which I loved), he was one of my favorite.

Richard Lewis -- much like Shandling, Barr, and Goldberg, he'd make you laugh until you cried. Anyone remember his TV show with Jamie Lee Curtis, Anything But Love? Man, that was amazing for one year.

Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby -- not jokesters so much as funny storytellers. I harbor secret fantasies of doing stand-up, and would probably model myself after these guys. My students, anyway, think I'm hilarious this way.

As you can see, my tastes lean heavily in favor of the 80s, the golden era of standup.
But I'm disturbed! I'm depressed! I'm inadequate! I GOT IT ALL! (George Costanza)

Steve Martin (also an exceptionally good banjo player!)

Pat Paulsen (may he rest in peace)

Moms Mabley (anyone old enough to remember her? Check out http://home.earthlink.net/~dianska/mabley.htm or do a Google check for other sites)

Larry The Cable Guy (from Blue Collar TV)

Ralphie May (the very large guy from Last Comic Standing)

                    Jonathan Winters

Robin Williams (probably the all-time best; easily the best at improv)

                    Bobcat Goldthwait

Steve Martin (also an exceptionally good banjo player!)

He is okay., was borderline genius but lately with all his latest, stooping to lowest common denominator, mass appeal, slapstick junk. Playing the same character over and over lately; the befuddled, perplexed why does this haveta happen to me kinda schmuck.
                      what's the term; sold out?

                      Jonathan Winters
                      great.
met him a few times. kooky and amazing.

Robin Williams (probably the all-time best; easily the best at improv)
say him at the Comedy Store sunset blvd years ago.
front and center; just a few feet away from him.

                      Tim Conway separate

                      Firesign Theater
grew up on all their albums!

                      Monty Python
                      yes!

oh and yaknow, was watching Jimmy Kimmel live late last nite. Funny, dry sense of humor. very sharp.
                      conan is great too.
Funnier than most all comics he has on and it's great when his laffs tsunami over the comic's...

gotta be george carlin...i can't believe only 1 person (LikaNui) named him! from mundane to morality, from dogs to God, he is the most keen social observer in stand up history...i his own words, during an interview he gave me: "i'm just watching society circle the drain, man"

rap replinger is a close second, although i agree he did his best work in sketch comedy...but i never got the chance to see his stand-up...

monty python deserves their own "favorites" thread...
