  • Taste Of Honolulu

I have never gone to the Taste Of Honolulu. I was busy cooking at Benny's (our now closed family resturant) all these years. I'm taking MAMA tomarrow. I don't want to seem ignorant and naive but can somebody please tell me how it works. I'm serious.

    Thank you,
    Lynn

      Re: Taste Of Honolulu

This is only my second year, but it was pretty similar to last year. You must pay to enter (3 bucks for adults kids under 12 are free). Once inside you must purchase scrips (like cashing in in a casino). Scrips pay for everything. There are tents from 24 different restaurants and various wine and dessert vendors. There is a stage with live music and rides and the like for kids. My recommendation is to bring a couple of folding chairs, beach towel or blanket, otherwise you will have to eat standing up. Portions are small and a little pricey. Most dishes are between 6 and 9 scrips each. Expect to spend about $15 bucks per adult. Pretty fun and nice as long as it doesnt rain. Hope this is helpful.

Hmmm, just wondering... why is it a rip-off? It benefits Easter Seals right? We were thinking of checking it out this weekend (for the first time). I know you have to buy scrips to sample the food after paying the $3 to get in. Does the charity get the gate receipts or the scrips?

BTW, the site works for me too (Windoze).

I don't support the idea of sampling what a restaurant has to offer by going to a park and eating their stuff off styrofoam plates and making more trash that clogs the landfill.
Much of the restaurant experience is sitting down and being served. after a hard day at work. and enjoying the ambiance. the setting. AT the restaurant.
You can't tell what the restaurant is like at a park. where they prep the food you eat completely outside their original kitchen.

IF I want easter seals to get my money, I will find their direct address and send them some.

I usually like to stay miles away from those damned inflated bouncy cartoon character things.

I am very familiar with these restaurants:
                        Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant
                        The Shack
                        Down to Earth
                        The Willows
                        Brew Moon Restaurant and Microbrewery

and if I want the other restaurants "showcased" to me, I will GO to the actual restaurants.

and I will NOT have anything to do with
                        Dave & Buster's

                          Re: Taste Of Honolulu

After you've been to one of these events, you really don't need to go again the next year. The same old vendors are usually in attendance. We have a big one up here in Seattle (the "Bite" of Seattle) at the Seattle Center the 4th of July weekend. Haven't been to that in about 4 years now. If we go, we usually make a beeline for the pad Thai, piroschky, the Indian dal and naan, Vietnamese bao, or the pesto salmon on a roll and for dessert, a huge dish of strawberry shortcake (strawberries from WA state). The bites up here can cost up to $5. It's usually so crowded (especially if the weather's nice) that you can't find anyplace to sit and people watch. Each little community has its own street fair throughout the summer (my neighborhood has a stock car show that's about 20 blocks long and is being held today full of restored cars) and many of the food vendors do a circuit of the street fairs, which is another reason why I don't have to go to the Bite every year.

If they're charging an admission fee, more than likely that's the part that's donated to charity.

                            Re: Taste Of Honolulu

After volunteering to clean the Ala Wai Harbor by dredging up trash in nets for four hours this morning, I'm looking forward to Taste of Honolulu for lunch this afternoon.

I go every year just as an excuse to be social with my friends while eating. I get bored with going to restaurants with their sterile, fancy-schmancy, trendy atmospheres sometimes, and I don't mind paying a little more if part of the proceeds benefit a good cause. It's busy and crowded, but that's usually the only way to attract big sponsors to donate money. They don't donate money unless they get some publicity.

Having been involved in creating/organizing events, I respect the amount of work that it takes to put something like this together, and I enjoy supporting events that allow me to have a good time and people-watch too. :-)

                            Yay for food!

I have accidentally attended these thru the years and am now burned out.

I get enuff of the good times and people-watching at busy crowded outdoor shindigs and hang with friends at da kapoiolani things often. and the north shore events.
