watches in Pearl Harbor?

I remembered back in my pre-high school days, that some kids were getting some calculator and TV watches (watches that you can control the TV with) from Pearl Harbor. At one point, I remembered hearing that they (or someone) dived to the bottom to get them and either gave them out for free or sold them to customers.

Is that legend true?
