  • finding indexes of sites

hi. an odd question from an odd guy. sometimes when doing a search on the web, i'll come across a google result that when clicked, will give me a page like this:

    http://vupipeline.vinu.edu/site/extra/vuinpics/Car%20Show%20'04/

of course, the author designed his/her site to look like this to the visitor:

    http://vupipeline.vinu.edu/site/extra/vuinpics/Car%20Show%20'04/index.htm

anyway, the page with the directory structure is kinda neat and i wonder if there's a search engine that specifically searches the web for those kinds of results or whether there's a way of using google (or any other search engine) to search for the same?

    thanks.

    Re: finding indexes of sites

    Actually,

That's an error on the web master's end for not turning off directory lookups on the webserver, and/or not specifying a default index page name, in this case index.htm.

    take for instance: http://nonstop.compaq.com/

Since the compaq site I used as an example probably does not have a default page name, the web server isn't allowing a directory listing. This may have been done on purpose as the web master may have wanted to turn off the site in a quick and dirty way, rather than removing the site name from the webserver config file.

    Another good example would be:

    http://www2.hawaii.edu/~lunebasa/

If she would just drop a Default.htm into this directory, we wouldn't be able to see all of her music and pictures... unless she doesn't mind the whole world seeing everything.

But she probably doesn't mind, since she's using the UH web site to host all of her pics and music that's on her myspace page.

      Re: finding indexes of sites

hi hinokei and thanks for the info. i'm just a hack with dreamweaver when it comes to websites, but i assumed that it was a convention that all sites have an index.htm for their homepage, no?

regarding the lunebasa example, are you placing the "blame" on the gal or on the webmaster? sorry. wasn't clear on that.

so are you saying that not having a default index.htm page automatically opens one's site to viewing of the directory? i don't think that's what you mean but it seems as though that's a possible interpretation of what you wrote.

sorry for the dense question but i really don't know.

      thanks!

To answer this question you can explore: Link

Also in MSN try the following:
        http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?F...%20modified%22

        The search:
intitle:"index of" -inurl:.htm -inurl:.html contains: (mp3 wma ogg) "last modified"

You can relace "mp3 wma ogg" with whatever file type your interested in.

            Re: finding indexes of sites

hey dave, i haven't had the time to test out your suggestion (been swamped with some stuff) but i was wondering what the search string would look like if i wanted to hunt down blues mp3s? if i just leave it as mp3, it'd be too broad.

so any way of narrowing the search?

if the answer is on the page you referred me to, just ignore this question.

            thanks for your help!

              Re: finding indexes of sites

I think file type is the best you can do unless you know another part of a specific file name that you are sure exists. Or you could try

              http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q...lues&FORM=QBRE

Hoping for a folder named "blues". This is a hack... experiment with it.

I am actually surprised that MSN allows this type of search given recent court rulings.
