Um, for sure I wouldn't want to be on Aruba right now! The Caribbean Islands are to the East Coast tourist what Hawai'i is to the West Coast and Asian tourist.

Most people in Hawai'i would probably find it superfluous to fly 12 hours just to get to someplace as hot as the place they live in. With the exception of the USVI and Puerto Rico, the islands are foreign countries, though. I think I'd rather go to Cancun or Ixtapa or Xihuatanejo or Belize or Costa Rica and to climb the Incan and Mayan ruins. Cuba might be interesting too, because their health care delivery system (socialist) actually produces a very healthy population despite their profound poverty. They don't have starving babies in Cuba, like we do in this country.

I'm looking into a trip to St. John in the USV. Most of the island is Nat'l Park. Sweet.

Just don't plan your trip around the time of the hurricane season!

I'd skip St. John completely. The crime rate is exceptionally high there. Friends of mine were robbed inside the airport terminal in broad daylight.
In my experience after several trips to the Caribbean I'd skip the USVI's completely and stick with the BVI's. Friendlier people, far less crime, far less crowded.
Try going to Virgin Gorda instead of St. John.

Bon Bini! I just got back last week from eight days of scuba diving around Curacao, which is in the Netherlands Antilles, just to the north of Venezuela. The diving is great, much more wildlife than Hawai'i, but apart from that I can't think of any reason why anyone would want to go there in preference to Hawai'i. I won't be going there again - it's Hawai'i for me next time.

                Best wishes, Peter

My parent are from the Dominican Republic. I have been there plenty of times. Hawaii is beautiful and is comparable to DR but there is greater poverty. The water is a different tempature there. I find it really hard to go into the water here. It feels very cold to me. Carribean has warmer water hince all the hurricanes. Fishing is awesome there too. My family own the largest amount of land and cattle in the north part of the country. My uncle used to sing merengue and when my grandfather died in '99 the Vice president sent a HUGE flower arrangement. The crime is horrible over there so if you go you better use a travel agent or if you are like me then you better have family pick you up. Crime is anywhere it is poor.
