  • 50 First Dates/Rob Schneider

    A dumb sandler
    and his awful pic
insults were generated toward islanders in the movie 50 first whatevahs
(they alternated b'tween fifty first kisses and fifty first dates.)

Rob Schneider plays a local named Ula. he speaks with some kinda weird
Mexican accent. (closest thing I can think of...) not local at all.

    The site describes its characters:
"...sue and nick work at the Houkilau cafe and try to help lucy (drew
barrymoore) with her problem. Nick's not very bright so its not easy.
after all, he has a tattoo on his face and thinks spam grows on
    trees..."
    gimme a break.
That is the junkest Pidgin.... so...Wot? Bumatai boys
    were busy?
    Ula grunts:
    "aloha! sorree ubout chore breein."

"whot choo teenk yore doeeng comeeng ovur here, takeeng oar
    pineupples!?"

and whats with that white boy fake reggae?!
"whoooaooo amber is the color of your energyyyy..."

    huh!?

a boycott of the film shoulda ensued purely on the basis of the movie's
    sheer stupidity quotient.

reminds me of that old media adage:
"Just because the american public will eat crap doesn't mean you
    haveta serve it to them!"

I liked it. It's an Adam Sandler film, so no one's going to set their expectations too high. And while there's some stereotypes and bad pidgin (if that's even what it was!) for locals to shake their heads at, I think those with a reasonable sense of humor can still enjoy themselves.

Rob Schneider was pretty much the biggest problem the film had. But Adam and Drew worked very well together, I thought.

Here's my review of "50 First Dates":
Walrus vomit aside, this set-in-Hawaii love story is a fun, surprisingly warm gem of a movie. From a purely local standpoint, it's refreshing to see a slightly different side of the islands besides surfers and cheesy firedances. "50 First Dates" has lots of local color — from the people to the scenery — that you don't usually get in postcards...

Yeah, I'd say the entertainment factor is what kept the movie from sinking, for me. I've grown accustomed to "ignoring" the "Hawai'i" in Hawai'i-set movies, because they're almost always disappointing to me.

I didn't expect Rob Schneider to master pidgin. Let's face it--NO artist can do that satisfactorily. But his pocho pidgin added to the laughs for me. I interpretted it as pure parody--given the stereotypes, which I chose to laugh at instead of allow myself to get bitter. I usually get bitter watching Hawai'i-set movies, but this one wasn't supposed to be taken seriously to begin with.

I don't like Adam Sandler's movies in general, because they lack a forcible plot. It seems he relies on humor to carry most of his movies, so when I get a Sandler movie, I know I'm not getting a "story," but I'm getting a bunch of actors being silly and making raw jokes.

        Overall: Junk
Humor: Okay to rent, but I wouldn't buy the movie or see it in the theatre

for the money this role earned, if i were director, I would demand he sound closer to an islander and much less like someone from oxnard.

TRUE! Did you hear how he said "surrrfing?" lol! Last night, we watched the Comedy Central Reel on the DVD special features, and it was soooooo terrible. We stopped it halfway through.

--But I have to admit, the whole "bottom feeder" joke was hilarious. I wonder if that was planned, his okole hanging out. lol!

*Note: Not to offend any one, but...
Personally, it is rather difficult to "kill" something that is not alive.
It is just a silly humor that the film company tries to portray.
Yes, I can agree with everyone here in regards to Rob Schneider,
I would also like to agree with pzarquon:

Of COURSE I'm kidding!!! Spent 30 minutes on hold so decided to be a bit kolohe since I'm so bored. The scenery was good though!

His pidgin was terrible, as was his "accent"...

Guess I should find more profitable things to write about when I'm bored, yeah?

Actually, da question should have been:

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being da absolute worst, how would u rate Rob Schneider's portrayal of a local in "50 First Dates"?

My honest opinon about that is...

Rob Schneider is the worsed ever in portrarying of us local people here!. Thumbs down all the way!. I don't even think that the film crew took the time to study how we all act, as oppose to going ahead & pretending like the way he did!. I think & feel that by his own protrayal, that I think he made us all here look like fools!.

They should have done a better job!.

So yes, I rate him a "10" in being the worse ever portrayal of us local people!.

                            That's my two cents.

                            Aloha.

the film crew has nothing to do with it.
the director and the dialect coach and possibly the script writer (tutusue? clarification?)
                              are fairly responsible for this.
