  • Mesa Air planning interisland flights

Good news for local residents who need to fly interisland. Mesa Air is planning interisland service beginning early next year. Another carrier FlyHawaii, will also add more competition for the big boys. It'll be interesting to see what kinds of fare wars might break out in light of the new competition. The good thing is it might provide relief for locals who now find it almost cheaper to fly to the Mainland than to fly interisland.

They haven't yet announced the name of the interisland airline. Hawaiian, Aloha, Mahalo, what's left? Dear god, not Ohana Airlines...

    How about Kahuna Air! Heh.

Re: Mesa Air planning interisland flights

By this time next year if all goes according to plan, here are the airlines that may be flying interisland:

      Aloha Airlines
      Hawaiian Airlines
      Island Air
      Pacific Wings
      Fly Hawaii
Mesa Air (or whatever its local name will be)

Mesa Air seems to fly as a subcontractor commuter for several airlines on the mainland. A quick search at the airliners.net photo website offers a lot of different pictures for Mesa Air. I think the local flying public will like Mesa not only for its low prices but for the jet aircraft that it plans to fly.

Island residents like jet aircraft generally over prop planes. Jets however are more expensive to fly than prop planes on short haul routes.

Me I am waiting for one of those prop plane airlines (Island Air?) to start regular service to Waimea-Kohala (Kamuela) airport on the Big Island. Currently not even Pacific Wings offers regular service to that little airport. It should get at least weekend service from somebody... the population of Kamuela and surrounding communities have grown since Hawaiian Airlines pulled out of the market in the early 1980s.
      I'm still here. Are you?

Mesa is the worst. Heres some pictures of MEsa's aircraft you wont find on airliners.net

You do know what the blue juice is from dont you?

You are right, Mesa usually flies as "somebody else's express"... With this airplane they are all the different express carriers at once! They are CHEAP thats for sure.

They cant even take care of their newest paint jobs. Look at the American flag. Mesa is a disgrace!

Re: Mesa Air planning interisland flights

Mesa is a bottom feeder. They are really after Aloha's operating certificate. Here is the truth about Mesa.

Mesa's CEO wants a 737 certificate so he can circumvent his own pilots CBA.
            http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04146/321454.stm

Mesa's offer to fly 737s was never made officially, this is done on purpose by Mesa to avoid the strict protections offered by the RLA.
leaders of Mesa's pilots union asked Ornstein to submit his proposal formally to the union's negotiating committee, which Ornstein has not done. In a letter to its members the same day, the union leaders argued that the 737 pay rates were "out of line" with industry averages and said they had decided not to act on Mesa's offer "due to its unofficial nature."
According to the article, Ornstien threatens his own pilots that...
If the pilots do not agree to the new operation, which would still be a part of Mesa while perhaps operating under a different name, Ornstein could still partner with another airline on the 737 venture or another start-up carrier.
And where would he ever find another 737 operation in the USA?

Mesa is one of 40 parties that signed an NDA (non disclosure agreements) with Aloha in order to present an investment plan to the BK court. Mesa's Director of Finance came to Hawaii to bid on DIP financing for Aloha. Their offers were so ridiculous, they were asked to leave by Judge Faris both times.

If you dont believe in such "coincidences" check out this article from 2001. Mesa grows by preying on the weak and vulnerable. When Delta Connection feeder airline COMAIR struck in 2001, Mesa ramped up an entire independent operation to "fill the void" left by COMAIR. They actually went as far to sell tickets (which were later refunded or rebooked on Delta)
            http://www.mesa-air.com/article_05222001a.html

Mesa finally backed off when COMAIR settled.
            http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnat...2/daily23.html

It is no secret that Aloha is having labor issues. Aloha had been doing a good job from letting everybody see their dirty laundry until this recent Advertiser story.
            http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ap...510110342/1001

For the past year this story was no secret to industry insiders. Mesa is here because of Aloha's trouble. If Aloha's new investors Yucaipa, Burkle and Gault decide Aloha is too much trouble for them and leave, then Mesa will make (at least by now) their FOURTH attempt to grab Aloha.

If it still doesnt make sense, do a little goggle-ing on Mesa. Mesa has not been only one airline. Over their 20-something year history Mesa has been no less than 14 different operating certificates. Mesa used to mean "Merge Every Small Airline". This is their SOP.

Here is an excellent article on the probable collusion between Mesa and United during the hostile takeover attempt of ACA last year.
            http://www.thestreet.com/_tscana/mar.../10122886.html
In its complaint, ACA cites a Mesa conference call on Oct. 7 as proof that Mesa Chief Executive Jon Ornstein made contact with United executives before making the unsolicited bid for ACA... Furthermore, ACA said that Mesa executives, including Ornstein, began selling their shares in September, before the announcement of the takeover attempt. According to SEC filings, a number of Mesa executives and directors sold shares between Sept. 8 and Sept. 24, with Ornstein selling more than $2 million in stock, or 175,000 shares, over that span.
Right now Mesa has new problems with actually losing some of their flying and options for new jets (with Bombardier) to Trans States and Air Canada Jazz. They need fresh meat and Aloha is on the table.

I expect the drama to heat up again this coming week for the airlines in Hawaii. Another possibility is that the AQ/HA merger that failed may be on again if the two airlines can sucessfully abrogate the CBA's via dual 1113c filings. Ah what do I know, I am just some HNL airport trailer trash.

              Setback for FlyHawaii

According to this morning's Star Bulletin, a major potential investor in FlyHawaii has pulled out, leaving the nascent air carrier with plans that will have it delaying its service until additional funding can be secured. It was scheduled to start prop jet interisland service at the beginning of next year.

"...FlyHawaii, the brainchild of Lion Coffee founder James Delano, says its expected debut early next year now has been delayed because of the pending startup of another new interisland carrier, Phoenix-based regional carrier Mesa Airlines....

"...Grove Farm Co., owned by [Steve] Case, was looking at investing in FlyHawaii along with Case and Maui Land & Pineapple Co., of which Case is the largest shareholder. Grove Farm was leading the due diligence of the carrier.

Warren Haruki, president and chief executive of Grove Farm, confirmed the company's decision yesterday.

"Had we decided to invest in FlyHawaii, it's likely that Steve Case and Maui Land & Pineapple would have seriously considered the investment," Haruki said. "A variety of reasons made us determine that the investment was not a timely one, including the Mesa announcement and the entire competitive airline business."

Re: Mesa Air planning interisland flights

mesa is blamed for everything by everybody in the airlines. For good reason. They are bad news. The CEO of mesa has his own public forum on Yahoo where he gets hammered every day by his emplyees. If you want to see what mesa really is about go to http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/grou...airlinesforum/ and read a few days posts from their CEO then you can judge for yourselves about mesa before every buying a ticket on them

                  NO SUCH THING AS COINCIDENCE

Aloha is seeking to impose concessions on pilots and flight attendants
                  http://starbulletin.com/2005/11/01/b...s/story02.html

Mesa CEO "will target Hawai'i residents who want to fly between islands — rather than tourists — when it begins operations in the first few months of 2006, Ornstein said. "We want the local folks."
                  http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar...511010312.html

"we shouldn't use a Hawaiian name," Ornstein said. "They said it has too many connotations from other carriers that have failed.
                  http://starbulletin.com/2005/11/01/b...s/story01.html

Mesa's CEO has a sociopathic personality disorder. He is out to see Aloha burn. Nothing else. Check my earlier post on this same thread...

You might be right..rumor has it that Mesa is a United Express carrier and United is meeting with Mesa to handle all ground operations in Hawaii and probably dump Aloha as a United partner.

Thanks to Prabha Natarajan for breaking the story we all knew about at Aloha for months. Mesa is only here to bully Aloha and our new investor Yucaipa!

                          http://pacific.bizjournals.com/pacif...07/story1.html

Mesa Air Group is positioning itself to swoop in and grab the market share held by Aloha Airlines if the local airline can't make it out of bankruptcy. Mesa's move is because of a weakness on the part of Aloha, and the belief it won't survive its bankruptcy," Mesa CEO Jonathan Ornstein said Aloha's demise would clearly be good for business. Ornstein told PBN. "But I won't deny that if a significant part of the capacity were to go away, it clearly would make our business a lot better. No doubt about that."

"We doubt Mesa will proceed if airline market conditions within Hawaii change in a manner which makes success meaningfully less likely," said Bob McAdoo, an airline analyst with New York-based Prudential Equity Group Inc.

McAdoo reduced Mesa's stock price target when he heard of its Hawaii plans. However, in discussions with the airline's managers, he was told that Mesa will bring on several partners to reduce its exposure and would parachute out if the market didn't change in its favor.
Translation; if AQ gets past this 1113c and the current labor problems management has created then MESA GOES AWAY.
