I don't know how popular Kia cars are in Hawai'i (they're pretty popular up here), but the company has issued safety recalls on 2004-2005 model Elantras and Spectras because their airbag sensor could confuse a baby seat for an adult passenger in the front passenger seat.
"...The computer operating its air bag system could confuse a child seat for an adult in the front passenger seat....
...Safety experts suggest not putting child seats in the front, especially when there is an airbag system. Some vehicles try to tell when a child seat is in the front, and disengage the system."
