  • Gall wasps and trees

Is anyone else seeing damage to their trees from these things? We're guessing that's what's left the foliage at the top of one of our coral trees completely bare, and we've spent a day or two trying to find out what might be done from the UH CTAHR people, the State, and the private tree/arborist people.

    Answers: Not much.

    Re: Gall wasps and trees

The Mauna Luan has had problems with gall wasps for a couple of months now. They chopped all the branches off the affected trees (apparently called "horning" the tree) but as soon as the new shoots came back, so did the wasps. In the past couple of weeks, however, the affected foliage have all turned black and started to fall off, and there is more unaffected foliage than before, so maybe the wasp birth cycle (or whatever) is done for the season.

    What will happen next year?
