  • KSBE buys Kamehameha birth site land

I think it is very significant and exciting news that KSBE land trust has bought the 163 acres surrounding Kamehameha I's birthsite, including the Mo'okini Luakini heiau on the Big Island.

"...The charitable trust announced the $5.2 million purchase yesterday.

In addition to the king's birthplace, the land encompasses the Mo'okini Luakini Heiau in North Kohala. The heiau is sacred place about the size of a football field that, according to genealogical chants, was built around A.D. 480. It has been under the care of the Mo'okini family.

"The Mo'okini heiau and the Kamehameha birth site are cornerstones of our institutional identity and the history of Hawaiian people," said Neil Hannahs, director of land assets for Kamehameha Schools.

"By purchasing these parcels, we essentially protect these areas from encroachment by commercial and residential developers and create a staging area to launch educational and cultural programs." ...

163 acres for only $5.2M sounds like highly undervalued land in today's hot Hawaii real estate market. What's up with that? Or is that only the finishing price paid of the total sum not mentioned?

        163 acres for $5.2M = $31,900/acre.

I think the Mo'okini family, who are the guardians of the heiau, probably also owned the land on which it stood. It was important to them to have the acreage protected in perpetuity and they "sacrificed" a goodly amount of money probably being offered by developers to sell to KSBE, which is a good thing for the kanaka maoli and the State of Hawai'i. Sometimes, it's not about the money.
