  • Damn those dams!

Maybe the Governor should also consider diverting some of the State's excess revenues to beefing up the earthen dams that are perched high up in the hills...when Honolulu was less populated, it wasn't such an issue, but now with people building all over the place, one dam breach could inflict lots of property loss and potential lives lost if they are not repaired. A grade of "D" for the condition of the dams on Oahu is not very cheery news, given what happened in NO and in Taunton, MA.

(Some of) Hawaii's excess state revenue may be enough to provide "tape job" repairs, but far from enough to rebuild Hawaii's dams to current codes and specifications for this type of infrastructural support.

From a federal funding point of view, looks like this issue will take the backburner until all the levee systems and infrastructure in Louisiana and neighboring gulf coast states are either repaired or replaced.

The amount of construction materials and labor required to rebuild Hawaii's dam systems in disrepair as told in this article is far beyond state financial resources.

It will be another 10 years + plus, or a major catastrophe here to get federal assistance.
