  • Don't Miss: Oprah Winfrey on Letterman

If you know why this is a big deal, you won't miss this.

If you don't, it doesn't matter anyway, so I won't bother to explain. Thursday night, the first of December.

People usually appear on the talk show circuit to promote one thing or another. Now everyone knows Oprah doesn't have to promote her own talk show on somebody else's talk show. So what is the big deal?

Well she is appearing on Letterman for the first time since he has been on CBS and the more important reason for Oprah is the fact that she will be there to promote a new Broadway musical version of the 1985 movie she was nominated for an Oscar in called "The Color Purple" (which is a good movie directed by Steven Speilberg).

You can read the press release at CBS's David Letterman website:

Queen of Daytime to make her First LATE SHOW appearance

Oprah Winfrey, whose renown as a television host, producer and publisher has made her one of the most recognized and admired public figures worldwide, will make her first appearance on the LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN, Thursday, December 1st. Ms. Winfrey, who appeared twice in the 1980s on NBC's "Late Night with David Letterman," has never been a guest on CBS's LATE SHOW.

Ms. Winfrey will make her LATE SHOW appearance the same night as the red-carpet premiere for the Broadway musical "The Color Purple," which she is producing. The theatrical production is based on the Alice Walker novel, which also yielded the 1985 film of the same title, for which Winfrey was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.
The funny thing is that Oprah will be competing with herself locally as KHON airs a rerun of the Oprah Winfrey Show at 11:00 in the night. Letterman airs on KGMB at 10:30 pm.

It's also a wonderful book by Alice Walker. But Oprah's not in the book.

Re: Don't Miss: Oprah Winfrey on Letterman

Did you folks not see Letterman a couple of years ago when he put on a bit in his monologues about inviting Oprah to be on the show and her refusing? It went on for 40-something days, sort of like the "Day 137 -- America Held Hostage" show that Koppel turned into Nightline. It was pretty funny, but it went on for about a week longer than it needed to.

That's part of why this was a big deal, at least to Letterman.
