  • It's all about the money...

Several residents of Kalaupapa are huhu over a first time author's use of their personal stories in his biography about life in Kalaupapa. The residents are claiming that the author fabricated or plagerized some of his book's content, but he and his publishers are holding fast to their story.

"...A book by a Mainland author about the history of Kalaupapa has angered some former leprosy patients who say they were duped by the writer’s intentions or never gave him permission to tell their stories in the first place.

“I feel betrayed,” said Olivia Breitha, 89, herself an author. “He stole from my book, and then he put his own spin on it. I wish Hawaii would ban this book.”

Breitha and two other Kalaupapa residents who are featured in Scribner’s “The Colony: The True Harrowing Story of the Exiles of Molokai” have pleaded for months that all words about them be removed, but to no avail. The book by first-time author John Tayman hit stores around the nation earlier this month.

“They have done us all a great disservice,” wrote Sen. Daniel Inouye in a letter to the Kalaupapa community two weeks ago, explaining how he had tried to convince the publishers to delete any reference to Breitha, Bernard Punikai’a and Makia Malo.

Tayman – and the attorneys at Scribner’s parent company, Simon & Schuster – stand by the book and claim that everyone quoted either cooperated with him or that no consent was needed because they have previously been written about. Officials for the New York publishing giant also insist that “The Colony” is told with the utmost respect for the residents of Kalaupapa...."

I respect the people of Kalaupapa; if they say they don't want to be included in a haole's book, then I think their stories should have been deleted. Now with all this huhu, MORE people will read it out of curiosity. Meanwhile the 2 residents are feeling humiliated and upset that their trust has been violated by an author and publisher whose only goal apparently is to make money.

If you respect the residents of Kalaupapa and the hardships they have endured all their lives, please do not buy this book. Mahalos.

They sound like they need a lawyer who would work "probono" and file a law suit against the author and S&S for character assassination.

Oh, that's so wrong. How is it in this modern world, can people get away with this kind of thing?? If the book is going to be printed then those former leprosy patients should get the royalties. The author should get notten

The old grey donkey, Eeyore stood by himself in a thistly corner of the Forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, "Why?" and sometimes he thought, "Wherefore?" and sometimes he thought, "Inasmuch as which?" and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about.

I heard him interviewed on "Fresh Air." (Listen here .) He didn't come across as anyone with any doubt about writing the book. Neither did he act as though there were any claims made against it like those cited above.

          Hmmm. That's a tough one.

You talk to a stranger about your life. Go into details. How can you object if the information appears somewhere later?

If its private or you want to use it in your own book then don't tell anyone.

They should get something because they have given to him. Its not a legal thing but more of a honorable act on his part.

More pilikia for the author of "The Colony". Rep. Ed Case interviewed Taymon for a segment on CSPAN-2.

"...According to C-Span spokeswoman Jennifer Moire, Case was recruited to interview Tayman for the program “After Words” on Book TV because he represents the Hawaii 2nd Congressional District that includes Kalaupapa. The format of the program, taped in Washington D.C., is to feature “a guest host with a recent nonfiction author who shares a common thread,” added Moire.

Last month, Case was among those contacted by The New York Times for an article that was headlined “Book on Leprosy Settlement Draws Fire.”

When asked how he thought the C-Span interview went, Case said that he had “mixed feelings” and felt “frustrated about not getting to many of the issues.”

“I think it was a difficult interview,” said Case. “An hour sounds like a long time, but it’s nowhere near sufficient to address the complexity of Kalaupapa overall or Tayman’s book specifically.”

Case confronted Tayman with the accusations, but also complimented the author, both on the air and off. The congressman said he tried to be fair.

“There’s lots of good in the book and lots of quality in the book,” Case told The Maui News...."

The particular irony in all this is because of the outcry, the book will sell more copies because people will want to know why there is so much controversy. And this is free publicity for the publishers.
