  • Hawaii's Gas Cap Law - Chapter 2

Continued from here... another chapter in the story.

House seeks to halt local gas cap
A proposal to suspend the state's gasoline price caps for 18 months starting in July appears likely to pass out of the House this session, after it received the unanimous endorsement of three committees yesterday. Whether it will be taken up by the Senate remains to be seen. The Senate's main backer of the price cap law said he was surprised by yesterday's House action.
The whole "...but we'll demand transparency!" justification seems ridiculous. One of the reasons for the gas cap was because of a lack of information provided by the gas companies about their costs and pricing practices, and then doubts about the information they did get as lawyers got involved.

If they got cold feet and want to back out, they should just say so. I think most constituents would agree that the only thing worse than passing a bad law is a failure to fix it.

And heck, a suspension of the cap will give lots of folks the information they say they wish they had -- an idea of where gas prices would go without the cap (again).
