  • Pollution keeping Kualoa Beach closed

"...Kualoa is a popular camping park where protective reefs keep the beach safe for young children.

It also is an ancient sacred place. Chiefs brought their children here to be trained as rulers and learn the traditions of their heritage. In deference to the sacredness of Kualoa, canoes passing by were required to lower their sails.

Mokoli'i Islet, nicknamed Chinaman's Hat, lies offshore.

Many important cultural programs have been held there, including the landing of the Hokule'a and makahiki.

The restrooms at the park haven't worked well for almost a decade. The city has had to pump out the system regularly, and according to a state investigation, none of the restrooms works up to code.

State officials said the ocean ban will remain in effect until the city makes improvements that may take a year or more, which would make the beach closing one of the longest in recent memory...."

It's sad when people pollution from a bad wastewater system keeps people from enjoying the warm waters off this park. I hope the City can come up with the funding and work with the local groups to restore this area sooner than one year from now. Even sadder is the fact that some other Hawai'i beaches probably are sharing the same fate as Kualoa Beach: too much development, overtaxed infrastructure.

Well, if the city had maintained the restrooms, they would have no problem accomodating the number of people who use them.

If you want to blame someone, blame the city for neglect.

Our "gang" used to hangout at Kualoa for kiteflying. We were there when they closed the beaches due to honu pollution. It was bad. Honu poop all over the beach and floating in the water, plus a few dead honu. The smell was worse than Sandy beach on an off shore day. We were there for years and never saw a beach closure due to human pollution. What we did witness was the loss of 8' of park and several coconut trees due to beach erosion. That's why there were human bones being washed out of the sand.

About a decade, huh? That's about 5 years after we left the park. The camp grounds were already getting overcrowded on weekends and started to get campers on weekdays too, not to mention the homeless that started to move in. The problem isn't so much over development, as there isn't much out there, but the "overtaxed infrastructure". It's like the H1. They simply didn't build the facilities to handle the amount of people now using the place.

When we were going there regularly, it was the best kept secret on the Windward coast. We were going there from before they paved the roads and we had to walk through the bushes to get to the park and beach. Even after they paved it up, the park was empty on weekdays and one could get a good picnic spot on weekends. Any weekend. We had some good times there. Good memories.

Questions? How about closing the restrooms and placing lots of porta-potties out there while they work on the problems? Of course they'll have to be tended to also. If we stopped using those facilities, how long till the water is safe enough to enter? Once long ago I remember the State trying to blame the commercial vessels on Kaneohe Bay for contaminants in the water. I.E.: Claiming they must've pumped their sewage tanks overboard. When that was proven false, the State then blamed the Sea Turtles for not using the proper facilities. Now we find out that it's the restrooms in the park that are the problem! Holy _ _ _ _ Batman! What're we to do?
