  • Rat-squirrel back after 11-million-year absence

    Source and complete article

It has the face of a rat and the tail of a skinny squirrel -- and scientists say this creature discovered living in central Laos is pretty special: It's a species believed to have been extinct for 11 million years.

First that hairy lobster, then this? What, are we getting smarter and finding more creatures, or are they crawling out of their rocks?
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

A brief review of anthropology would indicate that 99%+ of ALL species that have ever lived on this planet are now extinct. Fortunately, evolution (creation?) is running just a tick faster.

Any critter that can stay hidden for 11 million years is very clever.

One critter that's lasted that long and not had to stay hidden in order to survive is the cockroach (see other creepy thread) These buggers will inherit they earth they say.

It seems in both cases we seem to be turning up rocks we never turned up before.
