  • The sad time when hula went underground

For those who now take hula for granted, this history of the times when hula was considered unlawful will be a real eye opener. Mahalo nui loa to all the kumu hula and kupuna who felt it so important to preserve the culture of hula that they taught in secret and broke the law.

And as the Merrie Monarch Festival begins another run in Hilo this week, we should all be grateful that this Olympics of hula is still organized and run with the same sense of aloha as the kumu and kupuna had so long ago. And to the kumu hula who are passing on the tradition and culture of hula to countless new students all over the world today, me kealoha pumehana.
