Howzit Anitra. So you're a travel agent? What's your impression of the attitudes and expectations that your clients bring with them when they contact you for their Hawai'i vacations?

      Aloha!

I'm not a travel agent.....rather, we are an online only technology company providing a place where budget lodging suppliers and travelers can find and book with each other. We also have a lot of free HI information.

Good question! We've discovered a lot about travelers' perceptions of Hawaii through our online contact form. Some of them include:

-Hawaii is only for luxury travel. We've had an outstanding positive reaction and one of surprise from travelers when we've exposed over 1000 budget lodging options in HI (which we define by $99 or less per night). We hope to really change perceptions here!

-Travelers tend to think they have to stay in a big hotel or resort when they visit HI. We're also working to change this and people seem extremely interested in staying in smaller places, closers to the real people and real culture. Unfortunately, a lot of these smaller lodging options either do not have or have less-than-optimal internet exposure (meaning the independent traveler never finds out that they exist at all since only the big resorts have the big marketing money). We're trying to fix this too and actually have been interviewed for news articles pertaining to this idea....trying to educate the smaller lodging providers on how to use free or very low cost technology to get out there!

I could go on forever but those are the two main traveler perceptions at least I am trying in my own little way to change. Mahalo for the great question!

        Re: Aloha to all!

As a denizen of Makaha, I'm noticing quite a few more tourists staying in that area (Surfside, Shores, Princess, Cabanas, Towers). They seem to be budget minded AND want to get away from Waikiki and experience more of 'old Hawaii'. Are you finding more of a willingness for tourists to stay in more rural areas?

        Welcome to HT, btw!

Yes! For sure....especially on a 2nd or 3rd trip to HI, people want to get away from Waikiki and see a little more...
