Aloha, Joel. What halau? Who's your kumu? How long have you been dancing?
(I play music/dance with a Seattle halau, haumana since January 1999.)

              hi leo,

i have been dancing since december 2005 - newbie, yeah

i "dance" and study hula through halau hula o ka 'eo in escondido, ca.

sometimes my feet don't do what i want them to do - lol.

my hula kuma is kapena malulani perez from maui... great guy!!!

i also picked up the ukulele a few months back and find that my fingers don't do what i want them to do - see a pattern developing - ha ha...

i want to thank everyone for replying... makes me feel welcomed.

The only solution, Joel, is to keep practicing. I'm a very uncoordinated dancer, so I take longer than most of the haumana to "get" a dance, but once I do, I'm pretty comfortable with it, as is my kumu.

Same thing for `ukulele; I found that I picked up the basics very fast, but still have to practice a lot in order to play beyond the basic handful of chords in the keys of F & C.

You are new at it - give yourself time to develop the "muscle memory" - took me about a year to really get going.

                  hi leo,

                  thanks for the good words.

                  yes... practice practice practice.

we just started a "thing" for the summer where the kane come over to the house and we eat, chat and practice a bit before meeting with kumu.

                  it's great.

in fact, tonight is the night.

one day i'll be able to play the ukulele in such a way that it will sing.

for now i'm just happy to not hear the twang -

ukeleles drive me crazy... i keep wanting to buy one everytime i see one - doh.

Now you know how I ended up with three in my first five years of playing.
