  • the new york dolls

if you're a fan of the dolls, i'm certain you'll like this dvd. if you just like documentaries or stories about second chances, i think you'll like this one. i know i did.

it's about bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane and how he shot from fame to obscurity; years of drinking, attempted suicide, a very unhappy man. for years, anyone who ever spoke to him always heard him talk about the group that he once was a part of and of his bitterness at how unfair life was. to make a long story short, he gets a call one day and is offered a chance to play the royal albert hall with the two other surviving band members!!! (believe it or not, he's at that time working in a library in a church for the latter day saints!)

what a documentary. it's clear that he isn't a saint but it's not difficult to sympathize with this man. he's a guy who mellowed out after years and years of disappointment and now he's given a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing again, to step into the spotlight one more time... not only is it a chance for him to feel a sense of worth again, but it's also a chance for him to reconnect with a former band member (they had a terrible falling out).

you can read much more about it here and buy it from amazon for $14 (cheap) if you like.
