as usual, i'm sitting here at my computer with the tv on in the background. fortunately, it was on the Learning Channel which, i don't have to tell you, is full of excellent stuff. anyway, there's a program that's playing now that i've never seen called mystery diagnosis. it's great!

the program is basically a series of real life stories of people who were wrestling with some kind of physical problem but without a correct diagnosis! for example, the first story was about a boy who kept getting sick and not having enough energy to do stuff that other kids did; the parents took him to see tons of docs and since no one could find anything wrong, they started suggesting that the mother was just over-reacting! in the second story, a construction worker experiences a severe pain in his back; long story short, he's told it's old age, that he's just pulled a muscle, just in his mind (!), etc. in the third story, a dancer pulls a muscle, rests but then gets worse, to the point where she couldn't walk and some docs are suggesting that it's all in her mind! (she suffered terribly for 13 years before a doctor figured out what was going on!!!)

in every case, the show interviews the doctor who was smart (and caring!) enough to step back and go, "wait a minute. i don't think this patient is faking it. there is something wrong and i'm going to try to find out what the problem is."

the first story involving the young boy was particularly good cuz the doc who figured out what was going said something like this: specialists often only see problems as they fit their specialty. so the little kid's various problems were treated by various specialists but the basic, fundamental problem was being missed!

    what a cool program...

      Re: mystery diagnosis

hi serenity. it's on the learning channel (channel 71 on cable); i don't know how often it's aired but it was on last night around midnight. it's not the greatest, but you can check out this page:

      http://tlc.discovery.com/tvlistings/...ik=tlc_leftnav

and you'll see mystery diagnosis listed on wednesday at 11 pm.

unfortunately, the learning channel's website on this program is very weak (and that's hard to understand). anyway, you could try to catch it next wednesday and i'll post another message if i see that it'll air sooner than next wednesday.

yup. i know there's a lot to criticize about tv (there IS a lot of junk on it & watching hours and hours of it doesn't make sense) but i don't think anyone can deny that there's also some good stuff on the air. i thoroughly enjoy the learning channel, the discovery channel, etc. great way to learn about stuff...

for me, the main lesson from 'mystery diagnosis' is "don't assume the doctor always knows best!" no doubt, there are many caring and dedicated doctors but they're human and if your doc can't figure out what's going on, by all means get a second or third opinion. imagine what the gal went through as she suffered for 13 years and was told that it was all in her head cuz they couldn't find anything wrong with her!!!
