  • FTTH Pipe Dream

It would be really cool if we were able to get Fiber To The Home here in Hawaii.

But considering the huge financial undertaking it would be, I don't foresee Hawaiian Telcom doing this. Of all the telcom companies in Hawaii, I only
see Sandwich Isles Communications being able to this.

In short Hawaii is being left behind again speed wise.

Laying fiber is expensive. I would venture to say that even the locations that it is available on the mainland are limited. It would take them for ever to see an ROI out here.

I would venture to say FTTH is more widely available on the mainland than here.

In short it doesn't sit well with me that the max speed for residential Internet
service here will be 7Mbps. Road Runner is going to be upgrading to 7Mbps
sometime this year and I figure Hawaiian Telcom will be doing a similar upgrade
      to support their IPTV service.

But 7Mbps is wimpy when compared to 20Mbps.Heck Comcast on the mainland
is doing 15Mbps over the same kind of cable architecture like Oceanic Time
Warner has. As you can see, I'm kinda unhappy about this.
