  • Why Do People Get So Hung Up On War???

Now that I have your attention......... Let's have a discussion. War in itself is largely inefficient. They cost a lot of money, people die, lots of exposure, rebuilding after burning everything to the ground takes time. For what? Aquisition of territory? Aquiring a natural asset? Acquiring a labor force? Improving foreign relations? Protecting democracy?

Let's get the obvious out of the way. In the old days the Church was the vehicle (and in many instances the driver). Missionaries show up, a church is built, bam, cultural genocide.

You can only build so many churches so what was the next step? Lend people money. If you have money and someone else needs it, you have the pieces for a wonderful enabling- codependent relationship. For example, typhoon wipes out your coastline, you accept foreign aid in rebuilding your country, can't make the repayment terms, a microchip factory appears in the jungle. My favorite: lend money to someone who you know will mispend it. Give it a little time and call them on it, threaten to tell the world that they spent the orphanage money on a palacial bowling alley, now you really got them under your control. Money.....it does its job in the back alleys, it does its job in the state departments. It is way under the radar, comes and various shapes and sizes, pretty much invisible to the masses unless you know where to look.

In the old days, it was the Church and that particular country working hand in hand. Now, the Church has been replaced by corporations. A logical progression.

So why do we bemoan war? The loss of human life, the loss of U.S. life (which is kinda like NIMBY)? What kind of life do you have when your culture is stripped away? What kind of life do you have when you are always being held down? Some people cannot see the forest through the trees cuz they are fixed on a single leaf. In closing, there are far worst things a nation can do to another nation than drop bombs on them.

Profound words indeed, Nacho. Whole societies can be taken over without a gun being fired through "cultural assimilation". You're right about the influence of religion on societies (both the positive AND negative influences of religion). You're also right about the corporations. Who indeed is benefitting from our being in Iraq right now? Not our troops, half of whom apparently don't know why we're fighting over there, and certainly not the innocent Iraqi citizens who see their country torn apart and their relatives blown up by terrorists and friendly troops and whose lives apparently aren't even worthy of being called human beings (the DoD's definition of civilians killed is "collateral damage"...we can't even acknowledge that they are PEOPLE!).

Everytime this country has been in economic doldrums, what have we done? Started a "nickle" war. You know, just something to stir up the patriotic blood of people who for the most part only care about themselves, their families and their friends. If we go into a recession, will that be reason enough to take on Iran? To hell with the rest of the world. But for the Halliburtons of the world, war brings profits for its shareholders, and to hell with the rest of the world.

We could all just convert to Islam (after all, it IS the same God), and be done with it.

Right after 9/11 I thought our best attack against alqeida would be to drop care pkges over afghanistan of starbucks coffee, big macs, walmart jeans, college application packets and hustler magazines. Benign hegemony is a far more successful (and sinister ) method of messing with a country--change the people's minds, not the regime du jour.

Islam will suffer from violence, both internal AND external, until all references to "convert or kill" are removed from their 'holy' book, the Quran.

It is the literal interpretation of that evil book that drives terror. Along with Americans compliance for funding the terror by driving around in their big gas guzzlers.

Flight Lessons can be purchased at the gas pumps.

The corporate influence is there all the time, every time. It is like the Matrix. People bring attention to it in time of war but it works more insiduously when there is not war. "Roadside bomb kills three" gets a lot more attention (and headlines) than lending money for disaster relief or when Bechtel gets awarded a contract to build infrastructure in a third world country.

Keeping someone down until they get fed up and revolt is another popular play. "They started it" or "They fired the first shot" is just a precursor (and an excuse) to really bring the hammer down.

Pua'i Mana'o- LOL- you see the big picture. You forgot Marlboro reds and Jack Daniels.

Considering the state of the world, I'd expect more people to "convert" to atheism...

Is our "ignorance" of the true state of the world and our country blissful, or will all of us also be sold up the river of De-Nile by our leaders???
