  • Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman etc

Anyone in here like Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman. (Hell, does anyone even know who they are ?)

I know it's the "Polynesian of the 1950's" music, but I really love the stuff.

I'm sure I won't be the only one here on HT to tell you that yes, we definitely know who they are, and also that we've been blessed to see them perform in person numerous times.
Since you like the old 'exotica' style, have you bought the CDs from Don Tiki yet?

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Marty was directly responsible for my eventual move to Hawaii altho' he didn't know about it 'til 15 years or so after my move!

He and June eventually became my neighbors in Hawaii Kai. Talk about full circle!!! LOVE his music...Arthur Lyman's, too.

        And I 2nd Don Tiki's music!

Forgive the stupid question, but I was thinking that maybe Martin Denny was a more mainlander tourist phenom, than a hero to locals...silly me. I guess it's kinda like asking if you heard of Don Ho :-)

          Tell me more about him.

I definitely know who Don Tiki is...do they still play alot ?

I've been recording my own stuff very much "in the style of"......a little Surf guitar thrown in too. Definitely want to get a CD's worth of material and release it. I don't know who'd buy it, but people I play it for seem to think it's pretty cool. Actually, come to think of it, you can check one out on my myspace page

          www.myspace.com/cuefactory

          The song is called "Exotique"

A bit of an Esquivel influence as well. Check it out.

                ok.
Don Ho played Duke's back in da old days.
he popularised many of Kui lee's songs and help Kui get his start.
His infamous mumbling singing style is well loved worldwide. many come back on a yearly basis to celebrate their anniversary to watch DH.
He is known as Mr. Hawaiian Music somewhat on the mainland but of course, that is not what he plays.
He is known as Mr. Waikiki by many here.

he has eleven letters in his name.
he was some kind of musician or sumpin li'dat.
His hair got gray as he got older.
                    he was a nice man.
                    he wore shirts.
those were nice too. I hear.
I think he went to Waikiki a few times.

I grew up with my brothers playing 'Quiet Village'. My favorite cut was 'Kahlua'.
