Halona cove...

LikaNui
January 24th, 2009, 07:07 PM
Indeed. Halona Cove, more commonly called From Here To Eternity Beach.
Nice photo, GG! :p
And nice photo from MM, too. You can see the footpath in the top right, leading up to the Blowhole parking lot. And in the center of the photo, 1/3 of the way to the left, you can see what looks like a cave but is the drainage outlet that runs under Kalanianaole Highway.
I looooove FHTEB. Almost always two or three honu, a nice little ledge to jump off (if you time the waves right), but what I like best is bodysurfing there. The waves bounce back and forth off the sides of that narrow entry and make for a fun ride! Also, good snorkeling when it's calm (which is almost never), and some good underwater caves just outside the cove on the Hanauma Bay side.

i've never heard of kalanianaole highway. i thought halona cove was along kamehameha highway Kalanianaole starts in Kahala, by the mall, where H-1 ends. It runs past Aina Haina, past Hawaii Kai, past Hanauma Bay, FHTEB, Halona Blowhole, Sandy Beach, past Makapuu (wave to Lurkah), through Waimanalo, and finally ends at Pali Highway and Castle Medical Center.
It's a beautiful drive!

it's a great hike up to the top of Koko Crater.

Is that a pool at the base of cliff along the Makapu'u lighthouse trail?

Menehune Man
February 10th, 2009, 10:13 AM
Yes it is!
But this one though largest and IMO most beautiful gets visited the least.

When walking up the old road to the lighthouse, you'll come to an area with a sign about Humpback Whales. Find the trail that leads down the slope towards the ocean from there.
You'll see a few tidepools immediately, but after all the way down go to the left (north) a short ways and come to this! Enjoy!!!

The old convalescent home near Kahuku? Geez, that must've been too easy. It took you all of seven minutes to get it right. :p
Most of us have driven by it a zillion times, but I'd never actually walked in to check it out. Anybody remember when it burned?
And it's interesting that it's still technically Kahuku, since it's just a half mile from Sunset Beach on the north shore.
EDIT: Technically they're in Haleiwa, according to their website at http://crawfordsconvalescenthome.com/aboutus.aspx . Apparently the burned-out building used to be a home for wayward boys.

March 2nd, 2009, 02:31 PM
That was a hard one, sorry. It's Kahuku, right at the point on the lava rock. You have to drive to Malaekahana Bay, go through the little hippie cave thing, park, ford the stream, hop a fence, and dodge around some bushes. But it's totally worth it!
