  • Interesting Editorial I found

    http://www.hawaiibusiness.com/curren...=7&date=072006

Some interesting parts of the article for me are mentioned below :

"Specifically, we need a new approach to the Land Use Law of 1959, a
renewed long-range commitment to agriculture, a clearer understanding
of what “rural” zoning means, a deeper commitment to the relationship
between water and land use, and a more vigorous preservation of
conservation districts, watersheds, forests and cultural sites."

"We need to again ask ourselves, what do we love about Hawaii? What
must we pass on to our children and grandchildren? With the public
more obviously asking such questions, I personally no longer feel
like a voice of days past, but rather one of many voices calling out
for more careful attention to the future."

I frankly couldn't have said it any better frankly. These issues the former
governor raises, really need to be discussed by all residents of this state.
If we choose to ignore it, we can only blame ourselves if we continue to
    pave over paradise.

What is that Hawaiian word???? Shibai (I'm being facetious)

George Ariyoshi was/is the leader of the Plantation Asian immigrants who are responsible for paving over Hawaii.

The Hawaiian monarchy sold Hawaii (The Great Mahele).
The Haole Republicans ruled Hawaii with an iron fist.
The Asian Democrats upzoned and paved Hawaii.

Now George is looking at the mess he and his boys profited from for 50 years and all of the sudden wants to "preserve farmland and openspace". What a crock. Please read Land and Power in Hawaii by Gavin Daws.
    I will summarize:

*Plantation Asian Hui (some including the honorable previous Governor) forms and buys cheap "ag" or "conservation" land.

*Then they get their friends and relatives in the one party plantation asian city council and /or legislature to upzone the land to development.

*Then they sell the land to a mainland developer for massive profits.

Then the let the Hawaiians and enviromentalists yell "Da Haoles paving ovah da aina". None of that could have happened without the corrupt and incestuous shenanigans played out by his party, his people and even himself.

He seems to be covering his "legacy" to me more than truly caring about land use in Hawaii. Or maybe since he's already made his millions, he simply thinks its time to take control for fear that other people not as connected might actually start to do the same thing his people were doing for 50 years.

I'm afraid you are right. But nonetheless it is still interesting to have a former
politician advocate these things. You don't see any other politician puttting their
      neck out on the line.

Maybe Ariyoshi found some "religion" when he was head of Seibu-Hawaii and the corporation tried to pave over the far end of Makena by putting up a buncha expensive condo homes and a few "token" affordable units for the "hired help". Of course, those units for the "servants" were way far away from the more scenic parts of that proposed development. This fiasco was very similar to Turtle Bay in that the development rights had been purchased over 30 years ago and Seibu finally decided to exercise their development rights. Unfortunately for them, the Planning Council and the citizens of Maui said, "whoa, this is a different time than 30 years ago and you're not just going to build another buncha homes for the rich and famous". So Seibu backed off and the Maui Prince end of Makena remains pretty pristine and accessible to the public. It also helped that the parent company ran into financial difficulties in Japan, too.

You do. Look at Clinton and Albright. Running around all over TV talking about how Bush is causing North Korea to go nuts.

Never mind that Albright was publically infatuated with the crazed, porn loving, sick, perverted, people starving dictator Kim. Never mind that Clinton gave the Chinese the missle technology that ultimately got to North Korea. Never mind that the Clinton administration made an AGREEMENT with the North Koreans that they WOULD NOT develop nuclear weapons. But no verification.

The clinton admin blew it with North Korea. We're having to clean up their mess right now. But no shame. They both are on the circuit talking like experts when they created the problem with N Korea.

Same with quiet but effective George. He created the mess. Too late now George. The next generation will have to fix it on their own. Don't need your tired old dying ways anymore.

Don't go away mad. Just go away.
