  • Hawaii's Hospital Crisis!

I searched for a thread that would best fit this information. Please correct me.

In today's StarBulletin ~ the first of three parts!
    Hospitals struggle with overcrowding

    http://starbulletin.com/2006/07/09/news/story04.html
    By Helen Altonn

"It's not uncommon to have four or five hospitals on total reroute for two to six hours in peak periods," said Toby Clairmont, Healthcare Association of Hawaii emergency program manager."

As a frequent patient and one who brings an ailing MAMA to recieve emergency treatment - I am not surprise of the crisis. I have waited in the Emergency room with my blood pressure 200/90 as long as 2 hours. There have been times when I would walk out because I was too tired waiting...I would eventually return with worse pain and a worse situation.

They take the most critical care first...they say. I have seen with my own eyes that is not true. Onnada story.

Crisis? You bet your sweet bippy! I telling you, this week we got all kinds of problems. Almost attack from that crazy Korean. 'Shootings' on Oahu, Home Invasion/Robbery due to a Mental Illness patient, Medicaid Insurance woes, Homeless Problems all leading to everyone going to Emergency for one big headache!

    Wait. Me first!!!! Ok? Ok!

The bright side...it's Sunday! The start of hopefully a better week!

My tutu had to wait 5 hours to see someone this last week and she was very, very, very, ill.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

I remember about 3 years ago... I felt like I had food poisoning...

I was puking and everything... vommitted twice waiting for a doctor to see me.

After waiting 2 hours... I started feeling better...and finally told the receptionist I was going home...

I had to ask her if I was going to get charged for waiting... she said no!

St. Francis and Wahiawa are two of the hospitals she frequents. Not sure which one it was this week, I was just upset when I heard about it.

And Auntie I'll give them your loves and kisseys! Hopefully around this time, next year, you can give them some yourself! I was sad we missed eachother last time around.

I bring my MAMA to St Francis - Liliha. I dunno why but it's always in the late evenings. We don't have to wait. She goes right in and is seen asap! As for me...Kaiser can be frustrating. Honolulu Clinic is a long wait most of the times. However, it's closer to home and my chance to not be hospitalized is better. I hate being admitted. Da food is no help - makes me sicker.

The Moanaloa Hospital Emergency is always busy. They access you if you should be seen by a Emergency doctor or one that is there for lesser medical problems. Still, the wait can be long.

Once in the room. More waiting. Depending on who is your attending nurse and physician it can be anywhere from 1-2 hours to several hours! If it's several hours for me ~ I tell um, "Feed me!" Ainokea, if I sick...I still get hungry!

Emergency rooms is always a wait. I've been to Queens Emergency several times. The service and treatment is #1! They saved my Life when I was food poisoned last year. If I went to Kaiser ~ Hala! I wouldn't be typing!!!

Hawaii's Hospital Crisis? If I need hospitilization...dey betta find me one room fast! No excuses! Oh else ~ I going sleep in their Administration Office!

I going take ova the whole hospital!

              Auntie Lynn

P.s. Can't wait to hug and kiss your children myself!

                Re: Hawaii's Hospital Crisis!

At least the residents of Oahu have more than one hospital to rely on. Maui only has two (one in Wailuku and one in Hana), and the Hawai'i hospital system is fighting tooth and nail to prevent a private, modern hospital from being built to serve the needs of South Maui, which is where the population is growing fastest. There's also a shortage of nursing home beds, so lots of older residents end up occupying beds that could be used by younger, critically ill patients. There's no such thing as a "redirect" system for hospital care on Maui.

                  Second of Three Parts
                  Crisis In Care

Hospital ERs fall victim to success

"Hawaii's emergency rooms are swamped with patients and suffering from a shortage of on-call specialists and available hospital beds."

"With the emergency care system already in trouble, an avian flu pandemic or event causing massive casualties would be overwhelming, emergency doctors said"
                  (susie you right)

It's not safe to be sick nowadays. I no like be sick. Hmmm...they should take reservations to guarantee beds?

Then again, no one knows when they will become ill except those with disabling and incurable diseases whom have numbered days left. Most of the time they are on Hospice at home by choice.

                      Re: Hawaii's Hospital Crisis!

You just had to encourage her...

Ahem. Back on topic. There's been a flurry of reporting on overloaded emergency rooms and ambulance re-routing lately, on the national level, and even in the UK, sparking lots of localized reports in communities across the country.

Fundamentally, what many of the reports say is true. ERs are places where medical care is guaranteed. Medical treatment and coverage is otherwise elusive for millions of Americans. Basically, this means it is increasingly common for people to avoid medical treatment until it's almost too late, and where the ER is the only place you can go.

We've seen four, five hour ER waits at local hospitals... to the point where it was basically better to give up, and try and suck it up at home rather than fester in a crowded room full of sick, angry people.

Of course, one might observe that if you could suck it up at home, perhaps you shouldn't have gone to the ER in the first place. I guess basically you don't know how bad things really are until you're in a room full of other people similarly at wit's end. Certainly there are a lot of people going to ERs that don't need to... but again, given the way things are set up, that's all some people have got.

"Even though we're well prepared, we're still going to have huge problems," Meiers said."

(cough, cough) Uhhhhh...nothing else to comment. We covered dis a long time ago.

                            Yay for Maui!

The Tri-Isle Subarea Health Council today approved a certificate of need for the building of Malulani Hospital in South Maui, by a vote of 5-2. The hospital will be privately funded and have 150 beds. Only one more State approval needs to be secured before planning can proceed.

Many many people in South Maui will now be able to feel more secure in knowing that very soon they will have a hospital in their own community. It will probably help ease the overcrowding at the Maui Memorial, the public hospital, too, and the hospital will provide the whole island with some much needed specialty care that can now only be found in Honolulu.

That is cruel. Isn't there anyone to ask about that.
