  • Kaonohi-Moanalua project

Hmm. Most of this sounds ok to me, as somebody who lives off Kaonohi a mile or so mauka of the intersection. I particularly like putting a median on Kaonohi to keep people from jaywalking/turning into either the swap meet or upper Pearlridge Center, although I'm not too pleased with the aesthetics of a 4-foot high chain-link fence to do it.

I don't quite understand why DOT wants to do this, though:
Decreasing the makai-bound through lanes from two to one on Kaonohi Street, below the intersection with Moanalua Road
It's two lanes mauka and makai now, with a center turn lane. This implies narrowing it or something, which makes no sense. I wonder what they're thinking.

I used to live on Kaonohi Street, and know that intersection well. I think what they're saying in the bullet item you've quoted is that only one of the lanes coming down Kaonohi will continue down below Moanalua Road (were, presumably, Kaonohi will still have the same number of total lanes, minus street parking but plus a median).

That is, instead of one dedicated left turn lane, two through lanes, and one right turn lane, it'll be one dedicated left, one through, and two right. I guess traffic studies have shown more volume off that ridge heading right down Moanalua Road, rather than straight down toward Homeworld.

I'd buy that explanation except that the phrase "below the intersection" wouldn't be required if that were true. At present there's only one through lane on Kaonohi across Moanalua, which makes for people (including me) changing lanes from left to right ('cos Kaonohi's two lanes each way between Moanalua and Kamehameha Hwy) after you get through the intersection when you're headed further down the hill towards Homeworld, Westridge, or towards your desired right turn onto Kamehameha.

I'm sure I'll find out soon enough.

        Re: Kaonohi-Moanalua project

It's begun. This afternoon I went down the hill and discovered that there was a huge pre-sectioned plastic barrier down the center of Kaonohi makai of Moanalua Rd., blocking left turns into Pearlridge (makai) and into the swap meet (mauka).

I turned left on Kaonohi coming out of Pearlridge below the Macy's-side parking structure to get to Kam. Hwy and go to Safeway Waimalu, but it looked like there was a short bottleneck at the Kaonohi-Moanalua intersection.
