  • The Ala Wai

I just saw a couple teams paddling in the Ala Wai!

It's the first time I've seen any clubs using it since the Sewer Spill

I hope they wash well when they get out...

    Re: Ala Wai Paddlers!

I felt the paddlers were extremely brave before the sewage problem. Now? Yikes!

Maybe the bacteria has already affected their cognative abilities?

I was thinking their boats would corrode while they were in the water...

Could you imagine being the person in the back of the boat....

Splash Splash...the oars hitting the water

The good news is that the paddlers won't have to dress up for Halloween.
They'll already glow in the dark.

Blue Jellyfish in the Ala Wai

            1. I've never seen a blue jellyfish anywhere.
            2. To see it in the ala wai after the sewer spill makes me wonder if it's a toxic jellyfish.
            3. anyone else ever seen a blue jelly fish?

I posted a movie of it swimming here:

I thought maybe you were talking about Portuguese Man-O-War, but I looked some more and found this picture of a blue jellyfish from the Maui Ocean Center. I don't know how common they are in Hawaiian waters, though.

Manoasurfer321, they are not toxic jelly fish!

From an article of The Santa Cruz Sentinel 04-23-03
                http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/arc...es/09local.htm

"Commonly known as "By-the-wind-sailors," the jellies have triangular sails on their backs, which push them through floating feasts of fish eggs, shrimp eggs and other plankton.

The jellies, whose scientific name is Velella velella, normally stay off-shore, well out of harm’s way."

                By Kyle McGilligan-Bentin

"Jellyfish look pretty weird because they come in strange shapes and colors. They are shaped like a bell or an inverted bowl from 3 millimeters to 2 meters in diameter. The bells of Jellyfish contain small sense organs that respond to light and gravity."

"Their jelly like bodies may be nearly clear, or a color such as pale blue, orange, brown, white or pink. Although Jellyfish are often glassy or pale bluish in color, they can also be yellow, deep blue, bright purple, pale lilac, bright orange, deep red. Some Jellyfish, when they are disturbed at night, give off a cold bright light called luminescence."

No, Manoasurfer321, they are not Toxic!

actually, no it really is a toxic abberation. A freak of nature. This one shocks AND poisons. AND stings. AND bites. AND whips its tail if you get near.

This jelly fish looked like none of the pictures that anyone has pointed out here...This was a very rare and odd looking bugger!

I walk along the ala wai at least 3 times per week for the last 8 years... I've seen clear jellyfish when we get jellyfish warnings....But never a Blue one!

However this buggah was blue...and we don't have any jellyfish warnings going on right now!

It was today just a few hours ago!
