  • First Day of School

For a lot of children in Hawaii today is the first day of school. Many kindergarten students brave school for the "first time" with a parent in hand, but here at Hilo High(where I work),and other high school campuses they have 9th grade only day with the rest of the student body starting on Monday.

When did this (IMO) wussy practice start? When I started high school 29 years ago,no freshman would risk bringing "MOMMY" to school with them on the first day. There was no "9th only" day either, it was just "Welcome to HIGH SCHOOL...trying not to get beat up". Why must parents today "baby" thier kids?
I don't, my 8th grader doesn't even want me to take him to school to Register and pay his fees, he makes me wait in the parking lot.

I bet this 9th grade only day started with one or two(out of a 1500+ enrollment) parents calling the school to complain that "Little Stewart" came home really "stressed" on his first day.

    Re: First Day of School

Oh man, I remember my first day as a freshman at a Catholic high school in New Jersey. Gives substantial meaning to the term "say your prayers!" I had my share of turmoil as a freshman, but my mommy never felt compelled to intervene. Now on Monday you can bet I'll be escorting my kindergartner to school...but part of the reason I'll be dropping the girls (a 3rd grader, too) off and picking them up each day is the problem of predators, many of whom can be quite alluring when it comes to snaring little kids.

I started High School 20 years ago in 1986 in Phoenix, we had a 9th grade day there and yes my mommy and everyone elses mommy or daddy or parental guardian was required to attend. I thought it was lame then, but now looking back who cares it was 20 years ago and everybody else was probably just as embarrased as I was.

Well, if it's required, I as a mommy would go. No matter what the grade level. Sheesh. I hope I'm not paying the kids' way to their doctorates, but if mommy is required to attend Ph.D. orientation, I'll be there.
          I'm teaching my girls a new word. Can you say S C H O L A R S H I P ?

Good! That's right! I managed to get a scholarship for every semester but one at UH!

Can you say GPA? You got it!

Interesting. I'd never heard of the 'freshmen only' days at the high school level. Where is it stated that your mommy has to come with you though?

Otherwise, it makes sense, insofar as giving a distraction free environment to get your campus orientation. (The old way, 75 percent of the campus would know exactly where to go when the bell rings, and the other 25 percent would be getting in the way as they stumble about in confusion!) They will be spending four fairly significant years in those halls, so why not?

I imagine early orientations were often available extracurricularly before, perhaps during the summer... now they're just making them official.

Does anybody class scrambles? Where you had to rush to sign up to get the classes and the periods you wanted them at. That was a NIGHTMARE! One class close could mean you had to start all over again.

                      Hi,

                      http://www.nicholsoncartoons.com.au/...ents%20550.jpg

One of the most memorable days in my life is the first day of school. people shed tears on their first day of school. But I didn't seem to cry that much. The first day of school is a day of new classes, new teachers and a new lunchtime. After weeks of sleeping late and frolicking in the pool, the first day of school can be a stressful event for both children and parents.
